I bought the 160 degree sleeved thermostat from BCS and moved the sleeve to a 180 degree version of the same thermostat purchased from Summit:

180 label and where I soldered the BCS blocking ring in place. Used a soldering gun because a torch would open the thermostat immediately and needed the ring to seat against the flange without preventing thermostat's full closure.

used 2 Moss green gaskets. The lower one was opened up to match the diameter of the thermostat. Upper one, standard opening.

Thanks Steve,

You actually saved 90% of the cost of a Moss Sleeved thermostat and have a fail-safe unit installed. Did you take the dimensions of the ring to see if we can replicate it with a piece of say bathroom copper pipe? Although I have a BCS 160 sleeve thermostat installed for the past 5 years without a problem, now is the time when not having problems to build a spare for when it does fail.

I don't currently have the fail-open installed, it's the sleeved Robertshaw 180 per above. These have an excellent reliability record according to Summit reviews, so I'm sticking with that.

The Moss sleeve tubing is 1-7/8" OD, with the flange 2-1/8" OD. The width of the blanking panel is 1.2"

You could get by with 2" OD tubing and just cut a slice out of it to fit in the t-stat opening. The problem would be getting the flange smooth enough to seal.

At $15.95, the Moss sleeve is cost-effective compared to building it yourself. The fail-open t-stat is similarly priced.
