Shirley and I took our Midget for a drive yesterday. I filled up when we left and zeroed the trip meter. We drove 112 miles most of which we were running 65 to 70 mph. When we were getting ready to return home I filled up until the gas was up in the fill tube to where I could see it. That took 2.2 gallons. Car ran great all the way and the engine temp was about 2/3 the way to the "N" on the gauge which has been the normal temp for our car.
That makes it 50.9 mpg.

Wow. I've never gotten over 35mpg with my 1275 (1293 as it's 20 over with dual HS2s), but then I often drive it hard. Heck, I usually get under 25mpg!

Tom, 112 miles aren't really enough for a good test I would guess. Just a little difference in the way the car was leaning or how full you got it could make a difference. Still Bill M, who should be along any time was averaging up into the mid 40's during the Midget 50 trip and Frank C averaged high 40's when he drove out to LoTO from NJ. My Datsun engined Midget regularly get's low 40's at 2 lane speed's but the last time I though I had averaged over 50 I realized the two gas station's weren't level at the pump's and sloped different way's.

Try it again and let us know!

Kurt.

Thinking back, we were on 4-lane roads nearly the entire way. The road was quite level with no real hills and we did keep a steady speed with only a couple stops for traffic lights and one for lunch. We also had the top up if that makes any difference.
