Does anyone out there have a Triumph sidescreen speedometer that reads in Kilometers?:driving:
I know they must be rare since very few countries were on the metric system in the '60s,
but the parts book lists one so I'm hoping.

I too have seen a few usually on cars that also had a mechanical temp gauge in C°. Unfortunately they were also used on some TR3 derivatives (e.g. Italias) and that won't improve the asking price if you find one.

A few years back I searched in vien for a KPH Speedo for my XKE. No luck what-so-ever. Eventually a Instrument repair guy got mine repainted, by hand, from a lady who painted clock faces. It looks better than a factory made one. Maybe this will give you leed in another area to look at people who make clocks or something like that.

So if you use that face then the only thing that is off are the odometers (which will still measure miles)? Those, I suppose, require a gear change inside the head.

I am sure Jesus will show up soon. We had some online discussions about the gears for the odometer. I have no doubt that the speed needle can be calibrated for either KPH or MPH. So, only the odometer would be off...by a good bit. I think he managed to find the correct gears...but I am not sure.

Thanks for the introduction, John.

Yes, I am in the process of converting a MPH speedo into a KPH one, reproducing the original look (very little progress since our last contact, John). How to get a new face has been already mentioned (John can print the right figures and symbols on an old face with excellent results).

The gears for the odometer must be changed to go down from 1180 tpm to around 740 or 730 tmp (1180 divided by 1.61 – 1 mile = 1.61 km), depending on the tire size. I salvaged the gears with the required number of teeth from another Smiths speedo, and got both odometers to count kilometers.

Now I need still to calibrate the needle and install the face to finish. For the calibration I am building a fixture with an electrical motor to drive the speedo at variable speed, so that I can do the job on the bench.

Thanks to all for the replies...I kind of figured it was almost a lost cause (unless I win the lottery!!)
The answer is do the face & live with the odometer & trip meter. I'll go that route.
Thanks again.

Frank,

Why do you want your speedometer in KPH? Just curious since your location shows San Diego.

Very late to the party, but my speedo is in KPH

Crankshaft,
I don't suppose you would be interested in a trade ?
I've got a Concours quality Speedo (in MPH) to trade,
plus any amount ($$$) in addition that you feel is fair.
PM me.

Dear CJD

I should be very grateful if you would let me know how to get a KPH face for the speedometer of my TR3A.

With many thanks

Brook
