Starter issue

Just put a new engine in my 1973 TVR 2500M, but can't figure out wiring for the starter. I kept the old starter, but put a new solenoid on because the wiring posts were stripped out. The starter spins when connecting the battery even without the ignition key turned. Starter not engaging with the flywheel.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

There should be a large cable attached to one side of the solinoid. The other post has the large brown wires attached. The trigger wire is the white with red tracer and should has a slide one terminal at the end. Will be wired the same as a TR 6.

Thanks for the info. I removed all of the wires and started over, but same result. Even if I switch the battery wire and the starter wire it still activates immediately when I touch the cable to the battery. Is my solenoid shot? Is this possible since it's brand new?

I would remove the starter from the car and place in a vise and bench test. This will show if it is the unit, or a wiring issue, ignition switch, etc. if it tests ok, then you need to sort the wiring.
You will also be able to check the solenoid with this method.
