    Re: BJ8 Shifter reinstall

I used some wire to keep the spring clip ends closer. A piece of exhaust pipe the same size as the opening in the top of the housing goes over the shift lever and provides a good surface to apply...

    Re: Steering Idler Noise

Check the thickness of the shim(s) under the top cap.
  4. Re: Center Gearbox Input shaft bearing

In the USA - contact John Esposito at Quantum in Connecticut. He can help.
  5. Re: Master cylinder packing pieces (shims)

As far as even heights for the pedals, I have always added an extension to the clutch pedal, since it must travel more than the brake ( hopefully ). For a shorter person, this can be more...

    Re: Bonnet Latch/Release Adjustment

I had this problem and it turned out that the pin was slightly bent, so it was catching on th edge.
  7. Re: Master cylinder packing pieces (shims)

Regardless of why they are used, the design of the packing pieces suggests they could be installed without totally removing the master cylinder. The two-piece design, plus the open slot to go around...

    Re: Rear Hub Nuts

The rear nuts that hold the splined hub in place have a ring on the end that acts as a locking mechanism. Loctite couldn't hurt, especially if the nuts are reused. Plain conical lug nuts are common...
  9. Re: Non-Adjustable steering column questions

    Chet,
On the non-adjustable wheel, the long, one piece stator tube is attached at the back of the horn button/directional switch.
Disconnect the wires at the lower part of the steering box. They...
  10. Re: Non-Adjustable steering column questions

Send a photo of your wheel, especially the part that goes toward the dash, since that will show whether it is telescoping or not. Adjustable wheel will have a collar and a spiral band.

    Re: Vented Battery

The Bakelite battery trays are pictured in the factory parts books as standard, but since they were fragile, few survived in good shape. Most often replaced at the time with a board !

    Re: BJ8 Dipstick Broke

I wouldn't risk a piece of metal near a rotating crank shaft. If you can get a large magnet, once the oil has drained, move it along the bottom surface of the pan, heading toward the drain hole. You...

    Re: BJ8 Overdrive issue

Without taking much apart, with the car at rest, go under the car on the passenger side. Reach for the operating lever ( opposite side from the solenoid ). See how it moves, if at all. Pushing it...

    Re: Sideshift gearbox question

If you refer to your thumbnail illustration from the factory manual, look at part number 4 -"synchronizer ball".
Moss "internal gearbox 4 speed" - see number 27 and 42.

    Re: Sideshift gearbox question

If you go to the Moss illustration for gearbox parts, you will see part number 329-520. Checking the "where used" tab, the same ball could be from a sliding hub in the gearbox. They can easily pop...

    Re: Sideshift gearbox question

The sprung balls held by the side cover can be simply removed and installed. The other two have to be installed vertically between the shifting shafts, which requires the top two to be slid out of...

    Re: Chrome or painted wheels

    Pan,
Any details about the 16" wheels on a 100? The Heritage certificate for my 100 ( number 789 ) indicates it came with 16" wheels - I thought it was a typo.

Try making a diagonal cut from the outside.
  21. Re: How to Remove the Exhaust Manifold?? (late BJ8)

As a new owner, you will need a factory shop manual. It will give you step-by-step information on just about everything.
Get one - you won't be sorry.

Re: gearbox and OD oil drips

    Ray,
When you remove the side cover, take the nuts off first, then undo the long bolts evenly, a little at a time. This will relieve the spring tension. There is a lug on the backside of the cover...

Re: gearbox and OD oil drips

    Hi Ray,
The solenoid-side cover can come off with the gearbox in place. The o-ring can the be replaced. Relieve the heavy spring pressure by backing off the long bolts evenly after removing the...

    Clutch Release Bearing

I just got this from a leading supplier. It is a release bearing for a BJ8 and the two screws are giving me concern, having previously only seen the carbon bonded to the casting. Removing the screws,...
