  1. Re: Loose Metal Knocking/Banging Sound during Rough Idle

I've heard of 'stiffener rings' before, but not in that particular application ;)

Edit: Michael, did you also get Nock's modified timing cover, with a modern front crankshaft seal?

    Re: BJ8 Shifter reinstall

Ideally, you need 3, if not 4, hands. If you can find someone to help, good, but I've done it a few times by myself; I don't know that there's a 'trick,' you just have to muscle it into place with a...
  3. Re: Loose Metal Knocking/Banging Sound during Rough Idle

You are not mistaken. The 6-cyl cars have an oil pressure-activated tensioner, which I hear can disassemble itself, which certainly could cause these symptoms (though I'd expect the noise to get...

This outrageously expensive stethoscope works reasonably well (don't forget your 20% off coupon):

  5. Re: What's the Recommended REAR END oil gl Grade?

Have considered doing this myself. Mineral spirits--aka paint thinner--was our 'go to' solvent in the past, but it's gotten ridiculously expensive, if you can even find the waterless type in...
  6. Re: What's the Recommended REAR END oil gl Grade?

Wow, a 10-year-old thread comes back to life!

GL-5 may be problematic in a Healey rear-end. There are admonitions around that GL-5 has Extreme Pressure--EP; sulfur and phosphorous--additives that...

    Re: Steering Idler Noise

Honing is appropriate for breaking glaze on cylinder walls and cleaning up minor pitting on brake cylinders, but king pin bushings should be reamed. The bushes themselves need to be carefully...

    Re: Steering Idler Noise

Hmmmmm ... anybody know if there's any brass or bronze in a Healey rear-end? I see some thrust washers on the diagram, and they are usually bronze; may have to get the 75W-140 out of there (though...

    Re: Steering Idler Noise

    Steve,

I 'mis-wrote;' I was thinking reamer (most auto machinists will have a set). I wouldn't use a hone for this, if it worked for you, good.

Edit: Did you hone your king pin bushes the last...
  10. Re: What's the Recommended REAR END oil gl Grade?

I wasn't sure myself, come to think of it, so I did some googlin' (I usually trust RL's descriptions):

    Also, I think...
  11. Re: What's the Recommended REAR END oil gl Grade?

Sealing tape--white or yellow (yellow is for gas fittings)--is/should be made of Teflon. The shear forces in a diff and the pressure in the bearings will grind the tape into oblivion, giving you an...
  12. Re: What's the Recommended REAR END oil gl Grade?

I use Redline 75W-140 in my BJ8 to damp a little diff whine, and 75W-90 in the BN2. I'm comfortable leaving it for 10yrs/50K miles or a bearing/seal change, whatever comes first.

Many (most) automotive machine shops can do this. Buying the right hone would probably cost a bundle

    Re: BJ8 Wind shield

The two screws on each side bracket fix an L-shaped bracket that also screws to the top bracket. Just unscrew them and the top bracket should be released from the side brackets.

My BN2 has a very satisfying 'thunk' when you close its doors. I lined the inside with insulation that's like a thin bubble wrap with an aluminized sheet; otherwise, these early cars only have, I...

Re: Intermotor or Lucas Sport Coil ?

I've had a 'I' on my BJ8 for, oh, 15-20 years with stranded wires. The 'II' is not available for positive ground, unfortunately (it has some advantages over the I).

    Rob,

I have a BJ8. I went to get another set of the Ferodos, but the parts guy sold me some 'Spectra,' which he claimed were made by Ferodo, but I don't think they're as good.

    Re: BJ8 Adjusting valve clearance

    1) Remove valve cover
    2) Remove all plugs
    3) Put gearbox in neutral, use starter solenoid to employ 'Rule of 13;' e.g. to adjust #1 valve get #12 valve as close to rock (fully open) as possible
