Wanted Austin Healey 3000 with a modern engine

I'm always on the lookout for an Austin Healey 3000, and my ideal would be one with a modern engine swapped in. GM, BMW, whatever, as long as the work has been done well. I figured I'd leave this...

Re: Spridget Starter

I never figured out exactly what my starting issue was (I believe it was a worn ring gear), but I eventually solved it for good with a permanently-engaged high-torque starter. It was not without its...

EFI, engine swaps, reliability...

Forgive my ruminations. Winter wears heavy on New York City.

In the middle of researching NA Miatas I realized something—I don't want a Miata! I just want my '65 Sprite to always work! Yes, yes,...
4. Re: Engine vibes, coolant on the hood...Water pump?

Writeup of the pump swap:

5. Re: Engine vibes, coolant on the hood...Water pump?

I'll replace those hoses as a matter of course. They look old and troublesome.

Good time to put in an electric fan? It would take some of the strain off the bearings of whatever water pump goes in...
6. Re: Engine vibes, coolant on the hood...Water pump?

Two questions:

1) What is the most reliable water pump I can put in this thing? Long impeller? Short impeller? Vanes hitting linings...? I'm not seeing many options:

Re: TSI gear-reduction starter into '65 Sprite

This is why.
8. Re: Engine vibes, coolant on the hood...Water pump?

I can't see exactly where the water is coming from. I think it's coming out of the water pump where the pulley attaches...The car is fine until it reaches...
9. Re: Engine vibes, coolant on the hood...Water pump?

I'll get in there and give the pump a shake, maybe fill it with water and really poke around.

Is there a "good" water pump to put in there, or is it pretty much limited to the one Moss Motors...
10. Engine vibes, coolant on the hood...Water pump?

I drove my 1965 Sprite (1098cc motor, I believe) for the first time since September and noticed coolant everywhere under the hood when I stopped for gas. I couldn't tell where it was coming from (the...

Re: TSI gear-reduction starter into '65 Sprite

Full success! Thing sounds like an anti-aircraft gun when it's turning the motor over. It took a bit of doing to get it in, though...

First, I shaved over 1/8" off the mounting plate (after...

Re: TSI gear-reduction starter into '65 Sprite

I just spoke with TSI and (presumably) Ted said that there might be some filing involved for older motors (which I would say 1965 qualifies for...). Great guy to deal with, as has been mentioned...

Re: TSI gear-reduction starter into '65 Sprite

In order to get this starter in, I needed to pull this big air tub out of the way--I didn't see any way of getting it in from the bottom as I could with the stock starter (though I think the previous...

TSI gear-reduction starter into '65 Sprite

I'm putting a TSI starter into my Sprite. I ordered it over the phone and recieved the starter quite swiftly. It's a beast!

16. Re: Car goes "click" when trying to start - the fix

After my starter debacle, I decided to purchase a gear reduction starter. No more Bendix issues, no more grinding the flywheel--the starter gear is always meshed with the flywheel, it is engaged by...

Re: Starter trouble--Local lifetime replacment?

Ha! That would really have come in handy the other day--My '87 325is needs a clutch slave, and it's stuck parked in the streets of Brooklyn...

TSI sounds like the right group to deal with. Thanks,...

Re: Starter trouble--Local lifetime replacment?

So, months after the fact, I've decided to simply shell out for a high torque starter and get this car back up to snuff.

Does anyone have any experience with one of these? Specifically, which one...

Re: Starter trouble--Local lifetime replacment?

Well, it came with a lifetime warranty (according to some 13-year-old sticker), so it might last another decade if I take it somewhere.

Another honorable mention for starters:

Re: Starter trouble--Local lifetime replacment?

You mean my starter? I took those photos. It is a re-manufactured Bosch, but it does say Lucas on there somewhere. It looks very similar to the "OEM" starters I've seen online.

So...It looks like...

Re: Starter trouble--Local lifetime replacment?

Wait.

Considering my ring gear is 90% fine, can't I just fit a pre-engaged, high torque starter and be done with this? No Bendix, no teeth-grinding, rear-engagement and higher torque (whatever...

Re: Starter trouble--Local lifetime replacment?

With/without jumper cables, the starter spins, but does not engage the ring gear. I felt the tranny side of the ring gear and felt sharp edges and burrs, as if it had been ground up a bit. There is a...

Re: Starter trouble--Local lifetime replacment?

I'll take a real close look at the starter gear as well. I didn't notice much slop at all on the gear or the Bendix. I believe the burrs are loose shavings from the Bendix.

I'll try and be less...

Re: Starter trouble--Local lifetime replacment?

I'm gonna get the starter back out tonight. I did see plenty of metal shavings when I pulled it the first time, but I looked at the front of the ring gears, the teeth of the starter gear, and assumed...

Re: Starter trouble--Local lifetime replacment?

I'm 95% sure it's not an electrical issue. Previous to failure, the starter motor turned the engine very enthusiastically. In addition, I used large gauge jumper cables to bypass the wiring on the...
