    Giving that more thought...it's going to get pretty hot, right there close to the engine.
    I'm not sure what temperature nylocs can withstand.

    I don't see why that wouldn't work if you can find nyloc jam nuts; but I still use a flat washer, a lock washer and nut.
    If you need more room during installation, you can avoid pressing the pump...

    I use small stuff....1/4" drive ratchet wrench,6 inch extension and what was it .....1/2 or 7/16" socket ?
    Now that you have it off, clean the threads and use fresh nuts. Then you can finger...

    With our carbs you'll need to lift the air valve a bit when you spray so that the starting fluid gets to where it needs to.

    Assuming the carbs weren't flooding or dripping fuel when you tried starting the engine go ahead and do the 'starting fluid' thing and let us know what happens. The next step in trouble shooting...

    Your spark plugs will give you a pretty good indication of mixture....If the plugs are old go for a 30 mile drive; try to avoid stop and go and prolonged idling, keep the rpms up, use lower gears...
