Such an unassuming person, no ego, just quietly great.

In a bit of fortuitous timing, the current Road & Track has a really nice piece on John Fitch. Just finished reading it. A man the likes of which we see only too rarely.

Good run, we should all be so fortunate.

RIP Mr. Fitch!

Yep, a good run. I saw him last year at Lime Rock. Didn't look well then.
His "Fitch Barriers" saved a lot of lives!

I missed John this year at Lime Rock, but this photo was taken there only about 2 months ago.

Sam has some chronic health issues even though he's only about my age. When he was a kid, he rode his bike over to Fitch's house to get instructions on how to drive properly. I guess John did a good job of teaching him!

Stirling fell down an elevator shaft, injuring his back and breaking both ankles about two years ago. He's 83 years old and looks as healthy as a horse!

Nice picture Nial. John was a true gentleman. Years ago, I always saw him and his car at Limerock, just figured he was another race fan, maybe a little eccentric, in the good British way. Once I learned of his accomplishments, I was amazed how understated and modest he was about it all.

The world needs more like him.

John Fitch is (to me) like the WW2 Veterans.
I hope that these GREAT racers, who earned their stories-
I hope that they're getting written down,before they're gone.
Does anyone else want Posey to shave his eyebrows?

Trim or shave? Ol' boy'll look like Bob Geldoff in "The Wall" if he does.

..which on an older fella would look freakier.

An icon.

My father was one of his suppliers for Corvair parts back when Fitch was producing his Corvair Sprints. Usually he wouldn't let the parts driver deliver outside our immediate area but he had met John & had no problem with the driver taking almost a full day to deliver orders containing only a few small items.
