Since I removed the exhaust and started to clean up the block a little,

and was wondering if the body of the generator was black and the ends ala natural? Would you recommend high temp paint?

and last, any thing to be aware of if I decide to remove the starter and clean it up?

I believe that is right, black paint for the (iron) body and natural for the (aluminum alloy) end plates. Ditto for the starter.

Engine paint, yes.

Not sure if this is true on the later cars, but it's something to watch for: the electrical stud on the starter (and possibly the solenoid as well) does not use standard SAE threads, nor is the nut a standard size. You'll need a Whitworth socket or adjustable wrench to turn them without damage. And be sure not to lose the nuts!

Since you've got that side of the block exposed, you might think about adding back original style engine markings. I assume these were used on 4As as they were certainly used on 3s & 4s.

Thanks guys. :bow: I don't see any markings, unless they are behind the starter. I also don't have the stamped numbers. I think I'll go ahead and pull the starter and get everything painted before my brother comes up next weekend, so maybe I can convince him to help me put the new exhaust on. :whistle:

I recall the generators to have been black, althought my TR4 memory is dim. Having come this far, I assume you will do a full service/testing on the part. R&R starter is straightforward.

Thanks Bob. It tested good during my electrical issues, which were resolved by replacing the control module, right after I picked her up.The generator was in pretty bad shape cosmetically, as is the starter, so as long as I had the manifolds off I decided to degrease and clean. so i need to get it off as it seems to have filled up the gap between it and the block. Still picking out bits of straw and corn husks here and there.
