I have a TR3B engine and a early tranny with the bull-nosed starter. I seem to rmember that they will mate up if the flywheel ring gear is correct. One has 91 teeth, the other has 90 teeth. Which is which?

I don't know which is which by tooth count, but the earlier (bullnose) ring gear is pressed onto the flywheel -- no bolts through it -- and the later (long-nose) ring gear is bolted onto the flywheel.

The larger ring gear goes with the early starter (which has a smaller pinion).

Another option is to buy a gear-drive starter to match your existing flywheel. The late gear-drive starter will fit into the early transmission housing.
