Great picture!
I love these old crocks...especially since they have a linkage to Ireland (at least in name).
Some time ago I had heard of a Sprite-powered Austin Seven "special" and it got me thinking.
As I'm sure you know, there are lots of Austin-based "customs"...everything from Speedex's, the TT racers, the Ulster factory replicas, the little voiturettes and so forth.
I've convinced myself that the huge pile of Austin (Sprite) parts I have laying around could be put to better use than cluttering up my workshop.
Consequently, I've decided to build an "Austin-type Seven special"....mostly influenced by cars like the Ulster.
I ordered material (steel tube, etc) a few weeks ago and the main chassis is nearly done. It should be rolling in a week or two.
As I progress, I'll let you know how it's coming.

Fantastic picture! Worth more than just a thousand words.

Sadly, this picture of my first competitive driving event behind the wheel dates that I missed the golden-age of sports car racing. (This was in June of 1999, back with my last C5 Corvette.)

That is a great picture. I've always liked the Seven based specials and the Ulster is about the nicest.

aeronca65t - your project sounds really neat - keep us up to date on it! I'd like to do something like that one day. I'm only currently lacking the time, talent and money for it!

Except that's a real factory one, not a Special.

Hey Sam thats a cool garage you have - how did you get the TR7 behind the pillar - I assume its resting on some rollers which can be moved around. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

Roger:

I must confess...I'd like a *real* Ulster*.
Alas, I need to use up some of the dross I already having laying about (and a nice Ulster is not exactly cheap or common these days).
One of the thing I wish we had in the US was the type of events such as the "Austin 7 Triple Challenge" held in the UK.. There are many nice "orignals" plus "specials" in that competition. Looks like great fun!
The different styles of racers in the Triple Challenge can be seen below:

What makes it greater, Geo, is that you're driving on your front lawn. (If you were parked on your back lawn, then you'd be in Texas!)

I must admit that in 1973 I wasn't doing much except eating, sleeping, pooping and running around the house driving my mother mad.

And in 73 my SP250 was running.
