View Full Version : TR2/3/3A TR3 New speedo cable squeal cause?

Disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled the speedo last weekend and verified smooth operation with drill run in reverse. Bought and installed new cable from Moss. Worked fine, but after 5-10 minutes it began to make an intermittent squeal - a few seconds of quiet then a second or so of squeal, and after a mile or so the squeal periods seemed to get longer. At that point I disconnected the cable. The speedo appeared to work OK even when squealing, but I thought it best to be cautious. With a hand on the cable, the squeal coincided with increased cable vibration, so I'm guessing that the inner spring cable could use a liberal application of lube. Is lithium grease what I want to use and is it likely to solve the problem?

Check out "Speedometer Needle jumping"

Moly lube suggested.

I had my speedo refurbished, calibrated, odometer gearing changed over the winter by West Valley Instruments in Resada CA. In talking to Morris, the owner, he had me measure the cable end to see how much the tip protruded. If it was too long he said it could damage the speedo or cause other issues with it. Mine measured about 1/16" too long so I had him build me a proper internal cable. Like your intermittent squeal, my tach had an intermittent ticking sound that would get worse or stop by loosening and playing with the cable at the back of the tach. I just sent him my tach and cable to fix too. I've got Tony Rhodes speedometer repair document (https://tr6.danielsonfamily.org/Files/SpeedoRepair.pdf) posted on my site that might help you out if you haven't seen it.
