View Full Version : TR2/3/3A TR3 - positive earth cable from battery is hot

Hi guys - taking a break from the other cars only to find a new problem.

I went to crank over the TR3 to get a current baseline on her oil pressure before swapping out the relief spring and ball, and she won't start after a fair amount of cranking. When I went to disconnect the battery I noticed that the positive earth cable was really hot.

That can't be right....

Not unusual for it to be warm after a "fair amount of cranking". But "really hot" probably means there is a marginal connection near there, or possibly even the cable itself is corroded/broken internally. Takes several hundred amps to crank the ole TRactor motor, so the least little resistance shows up as a hot spot.

But unless it was cranking substantially slower than usual, I doubt that's why it wouldn't light off. Might possibly indicate a bad starter, but again that would usually be accompanied by slow cranking.

Do you have fuel pressure ?

As always, thanks Randall.

I just looked at the cable again and it is cracked under the rubber sheath. I'll have to replace it.

I think the starter is fine, normal/strong cranking.

I'm going to let her sit a bit because I may have flooded her.
