I'm doing a restoration of the '71 TR6 I bought this spring and today I pulled the engine and trans. I pulled the trans. off and saw the strangest looking crud on the clutch. There was also a big mass of fuzz around the throwout bearing and arm. On closer inspection, it looks like whoever put the thing together last left a red shop rag inside the clutch. The clutch seemed to work OK (engages really near the floor but I gather that is just a TR6 thing). It's always entertaining...

I am in sales and sold a 2 million dollar set of dampers to a local power company they had trouble with the hydrolic system and when they took it apart found a paper towel in the hydrolic line. so not only a local mechanic or home mechanic problem. have fun with the rebuild

Well that is a new one. I have been introduced to saw dust in the diff and trans, and heavy oil, even wax in the motor but never a hint that a rag in the clutch would be of any short time benefit.

Could have been an accidental application of Rogain.
