Yahoo won't allow access to that link for some reason - even directly, so we're seeing nothing there, just a dead link.

I'm here graemlins/hammer.gif I took Alida for a nice drive today to the west coast of the island!! It was beautiful and sunny so we walked down to Sombreo Beach and watched the surfers!! Can you believe it??? About 60' or 65' (F)in the middle of January!! We were down to tee shirts!! I still don't think that getting on a surfboard looked that appealing, even in a wet suit!!! There was a guy down there with a digital camera hooked up to a spotting scope!! Did it ever work good!!! Looked at a couple of motorhomes for our trek next fall, Fords with 460's!! Then we went for oysters and clams!! Beat that for a day off!!!!! images/icons/grin.gif

01-13-2003, 12:57 AM

Alida and I are comin' back to see you guys!! I gotta help Kim build a garage!! It should be fun!! images/icons/grin.gif

01-13-2003, 01:39 AM
Kim and I were talkin about a garage raisin. If she got the concrete down, tha rest wouldn't take long if she got enough help

Gary Lloyd
01-13-2003, 02:07 AM
I don't know how you guys build there, but I would suspect it would be more like we do than them guys in California!! I would suspect footing, foundation walls and a slab inside the walls!! I can do that, or I can load a bunch of tools and frame it. In a motorhome, there would be no issue of bringing tools across the border!!
I would suspect I would be better to frame it, because it might be a little difficult tying it into the house!! I have done lots of that stuff!! I would really like to help though, and will do whatever works!! graemlins/cheers.gif

01-13-2003, 02:19 AM
that sounds like allot of work, Kim better have lots of Beer. I'll be there if I can get any time off work. I told her I'd do the power. She doesn't know she'll have enough service to run an air compressor or a welder, but it won't hurt her to have it if she needs it

Gary Lloyd
01-13-2003, 02:39 AM
How many amp service does she have?? Is converting her range (kitchen stove) to a gas range an option?? It frees up 40 amps! Well, 25 anyway, cause you still need a dedicated circuit for a 15 amp plug!! Do you think she could find Kokanee Beer?? Check out https://www.beer.com

Well, this year's trip is Canada/Alaska...next year's is Nova Scotia & all of US between here & there...we're gonna visit Kim & will need 30amp service for our Airstream motorhome.....so, Gary: reserve enough for it & whatever RV you buy...
...oh, Chevy 454 is better than Ford 460!

Gary Lloyd
01-15-2003, 01:32 AM
Not a chance Tony!! I don't know if you have ever had either apart, but I've had them both!! A 454 is like a glorified 350, and a 460 is like a light diesel!! If a 454 has to work, they don't last!! A good friend of mine has a work boat with a 454, it never lasted 100 hours!! I will agree that a 454 produces more horsepower and breathes better, and will last a long time in a car, but not in a 12,000 lb vehicle!! Just my humble opinion! graemlins/lol.gif

Kim de B
01-15-2003, 09:27 AM
Geez, you guys, I wasn't even gonna check the end of this thread because it was getting so long, but here you are building my garage for me, and you've got it almost done!

The house is a modular-built all-electric, and we definitely want to tie into it. Converting to a gas stove is definitely an option that I know Chas. would love. (But would add to the expense of the overall project, of course.) We've got 5 empty circuit breaker slots left on a 120A subpanel, but we filled up the 200A main panel when we finished a room upstairs. (The electric baseboard heat takes up a lot)

Don't know what that means in term of remaining capacity without going to look in a book, but we definitely need juice for the compressor. Don't have a welder yet, but Chas. has every other tool known to man and Craftsman.

By the way, I do the wiring on our home improvement projects. I'm a rank amateur compared to you guys, but nothing's burned down yet. OK, so I almost electrocuted Chas. once when I didn't turn off the right circuit breaker (a double-switch job), but it could happen to anyone images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Anyway, guess we'd better get going getting this project designed if you guys are really going to come help with it. Hmmm, MG2004 will be in this neck of the woods . . . Maybe we could time it for then? But that'll be in the summer, and Gary's trip will be in the fall, so maybe we'd better stick with that plan, if a plan it really is...

Gary Lloyd
01-15-2003, 12:16 PM
And here I thought you were ignoring us!! images/icons/grin.gif A 200 amp service is good!! I would be really suprised if ther wasn't room!! Yu, we gotta' build you a garage!! graemlins/cheers.gif

01-15-2003, 03:04 PM
the main thing with the service is you gotta remember not everything is gonna be running at the same time. Code here let's you run 40% over the service size. I ran a 70 amp sub panel out to my garage, which is plenty

I am up for helping with the garage raising and Kim I dont need no stickin beer haven't had one for 23 years and not going to start now, besides if I was drinkin beer there aint enough in PA to quench my thirst

I would love to see this thread got to 4 pages BTW Basil what is the record?

01-16-2003, 09:12 PM
actually, Tony's garage is smaller than his house by some 50 square feet, per agreement with his wife. and Henri, join the MG list on Tony's site, the autoist (https://www.theautoist.com), buy a tshirt from him (shameless plug) and we'll teach you the secret handsign and you can be one of us (as if you already aren't)

This could be the eternal thread until we get Kim's garage built! LOL But what a nice thinkg to read while I ate my lunch today...what else is there to do when it is 20 degrees???

Andre the Giant
01-17-2003, 05:04 PM
In Missouri, my dream garage would have A/C and heat. I would like an overhead hoist for removing the engine. It would be nice if there was a pit with removable grates in case- (in case??? what am I thinking? graemlins/crazy.gif ) -for when I need to get under the Midget. Lots of shelving would be nice for spare parts, etc. Then a nice 3' X 8' workbench would come in handy. Lots of lights would grace the dream garage and at least one whole wall would be paneled with peg board.

That's for starters.... graemlins/lol.gif

This is the beauty of useless threads. You don't have to read and contribute to it unless you're having a useless day. . .

Anyway, I mentioned to Chas. today at breakfast that in a year and a half or so, we may have a couple Land Yachts and MGs descending on our property to build our garage and extension. He is really doubting that this will ever happen. I told him that, if nothing else, the very thought of it could get us motivated to start making plans for it.

He also doesn't think we can get a construction loan if a bunch of beer-drinking British car fanatics, most of whom we have never met, are going to be building it . . .

I didn't want it to go that far!! images/icons/wink.gif I will have to hire Sam Chandler and get real serious!! graemlins/angel.gif Before you know it, I'll be driving a Healey (Henri's ol one) and looking after his wife and kids!! images/icons/tongue.gif Sometimes life is tuff!! images/icons/smile.gif Maybe, just maybe if Henri does show up at Kim's and proves to be a decent guy (for a Healey driver) I won't take it all!! graemlins/crazy.gif I know, you guys know I have a slam dunk, but I feel kind of charitable today!! It's all Henri's fault Kim!! I therefore and henceworth images/icons/smile.gif contacted my attorneys!! We seached all precidents in the state of California (cuz that is where Henri lives, and they give out larger awards) and Pennsylvania (because that is where this alledged discrimination will take place) and I think he is in serious trouble!! graemlins/angel.gif So I guess really it is all your fault!! edited by images/icons/wink.gif

Hey, Gary.....I've been in this thing all along...I just redirect the thread occassionally....I mean, do you really think you can handle 2 families in different parts of the world? Driving an MG up there with 1 wife; driving an Austin Healy other place with anther wife....&, lawyer? Expensive, buddy...you might have to sell one family to afford the other...&, you can't sell the one you don't yet own!

...nah, time to talk about what we did over weekend...or go back to talking about Kim's garage....we've gotta build a circular drive so you & I can get in & out with our rigs pulling our MG's....mine's 50' long including car trailer...

Maybe we should do a TV Sitcom about this thread...it would have to have a "british" flair...what would we call it..."Monty Python" has already been done...lets see..."Can I Help You Build a Garage, Madam"...no that won't do..."The Crew From BCR"...no again..."A Canuck Over Indiana"...still off..."Three "Real" Men And A Hammer"(Chuck, Gary and Tony...plus Phil)...I know that makes four...It's for artistic sake...three is universal...four is "square" (my new age moment)...I got it..."A Girl, Her MG And A Garage"...stay tuned for more in tomorrow's installment... graemlins/nonod.gif

Will Gary get to hammer...

Will Chuck be able to explain why not to bring a knife to a gunfight...

Will Tony find his way back home from the musemum...

Will Phil figure out that we are on page 6...

Will Kim ever get a garage...

And, last...what is Henri doing on an MG Forum...when he drives a Healey... graemlins/hammer.gif graemlins/cryin.gif graemlins/nonod.gif graemlins/yesnod.gif graemlins/troll.gif

you forgot:

Will Tony really cut roof rafters?

Will Tony and Gary kill each other?

Will Chuck be smart enough to stay out of it?

Will Kim ever regain her sanity?

Will Kim's husband Charles ever trust an LBC and ride with Kim to a show?

Will Henri ever let Tony drive his Healy?

Will Chuck's wife Laura be able to get all her antique purchases in the trunk of a B?

and finally, will Kim produce the fabled black bear?

and we could call it FAWLTY GARAGES in Basil's honor

Tony, we've got the property for a circular driveway, but we'd have to destroy Chas's nature trail through the woods in order to do it, and he won't go for that!

Backing your 50-foot Behemoth out onto the street won't be too much of a problem, since we don't get that much traffic . . . Or probably the best plan would be to back it into the driveway to begin with. And we don't have to worry about upsetting the neighbors, because they're all dead . . . images/icons/rolleyes.gif

Seems that no-one wants to step up to design the garage, so I will offer to be the design consultant. graemlins/computer.gif
1.We all know the usual stuff that is must have;
heat, air conditioning, air compressor ... but it must be in a separate utility room (soundproof)
2.It must also have a floor drain and hot and cold running water.
3.It should have a resilient floor because I hate dropping tools or parts only to have them break on concrete.
4.A platter turntable the size of the car to spin it around to any direction
5.A front and rear twin hydaulic post to attach and lift the car, with rotisserie heads to invert the car. Both 4 and 5 by remote control.
6.Must have skylights, not windows. (don't want anyone to see inside)
7.An overhead crane rail and engine hoist (remote controlled)
8.Separate parts department room with every nut, bolt, washer possible for your car.
9.Because the garage must be high enough for all this ... about 16 feet clear... a loft for the bigscreen TV to watch car races, beer fridge and kegs on tap, microwave for popcorn, a computer for research, and a lazy-boy(girl)-recliner for those moments when working on the car becomes too frustrating.

Then you repeat 1 to 9 for the number of cars you intend to park in the garage.

Almost forgot, not attached to the house because it is too easy for the family to come and interupt you. No phone or intercom either, cause they will call you. And of course a bathroom with a shower is a must.

I estimate the whole thing would cost a meager $250,000 (Canadian) per car. Let me know and I will start the detailed construction drawings right away. graemlins/jester.gif

And of course there is my fee.

Mr. Adams,
you have forgotten the complete bathroom, so Kim can clean up before she goes into the house.

Chuck...I guess...reading is another difficulty for MG owners...

I have to make sure that I spread it around...Gary was too easy of a target...oh I forgot about Phil.. graemlins/cheers.gif

Hey...Gary what are you doing on the Healey board...I guess everyone wants a Healey...even MG guys.. graemlins/angel.gif

I warned them about you over there...I told them to lock all there doors and keep their women and children safe...because some MG guy (Gary and Chuck) were posting on the board... graemlins/lol.gif graemlins/lol.gif graemlins/lol.gif graemlins/lol.gif

And I thought Chas. was daydreaming thinking of putting an oil pit in the the garage! He's got nothing on you guys!

I see that I am going to have to start a fund-raiser here on the BCF in order to subsidize this project..... images/icons/shocked.gif

and we could call it FAWLTY GARAGES in Basil's honor

I don't know...do you really think Kim wants a "faulty" garage...or is that what she will get if you guys build it...now I know why she's nervous...I heard she's buying...insurance...with a rider that states...something about BCR MG people building a garage...while drinking her beer...I don't really know for sure...it's a rumor at this point...you know how these things get started...someone idly makes a remark...and then next thing you know your reading it on a posting...so on and so forth...forget it...it's just a rumor...nothing to worry about...she'll probably be happy with any kind of garage...even if it only stands for a...what couple months...maybe a year... images/icons/rolleyes.gif

oh, well

01-20-2003, 10:42 PM
well boys and girls, I went back to visit my surgeon today and had 27 staples taken out and got a new boot caste to wear for the next 4 weeks. I wore my MG List Tshirt and it turns out that he has recently purchased an E type that was advertised as being "rust free" paying about 30K for a car he thought just needed paint. He took it to the local Brit mechanic who showed him that the Backbone of the chasis along with the sills were just being held together with Bondo. The mechanic wouldn't even take it for a test drive for fear of breaking it in half. He has engaged messrs. Dewey, Cheathem, and Howe to get his money back.

Another case of buying a car cause it looks cute amazing what can be done with bondo and a rattle can

OUCH!!!! Sorry I picked on you... graemlins/nonod.gif

The biggest problem is that it burned him on collector Brits, or collector cars at all for the matter. And I got some more pain pills so don't worry about me graemlins/thirsty.gif

I guess the thing about this topic that I find most humorous, is the fact that the tittle says "? for Basil" and Basil is about the only person who hasn't responded!

I thought this was all about nonsensical chatter! I'm still trying to decide wether to jump in and volunteer myself and my services to build this now fabbled garage next year. I think it might be worth it, just to meet al these crazy folks! (though I still wouldn't be driving an MG)

Cmon over Tony, we can use all the help we can get. And the only reason I'll probably drive a B to the event is to keep Laura out of those New England antique shops

01-21-2003, 02:32 AM
and I may have to buy a land yacht to keep up with the Lloyds and Barnhills

youngsmith
01-21-2003, 02:37 AM
Hmm, well I've got a "land yacht" but I"m not sure the spitfire could tow it. my land yacht is a '69 model airstream, and it's badged Land yacht right on the thing!

I would like to take my B to the Garage Raisin'since Chas and Kim live about two hours from me, but if I am gonna take a bunch of tools, I will probable have to take the ole Ford pickup or the Surburban...which I hope to replace with a TrailBlazer by then. BTW, did MG ever build a 4WD SUV??? Hmmmmmmm ;-))

Bruce (E Curb backwards) and not the Autoist either, but I can dream of a fleet of MG's!!!
