View Full Version : Elan +2

I'm going to looking at a '69 +2 on Sunday.

The description is as follows:
Car has been well maintained and continuously improved,
Runs well and is a reliable driver,
Fresh rebuilt engine, and complete cv joint rear end,
Body and interior in good condition,
Needs paint

and a pic.

price is roughly equivalent to $7.5K US.

I realize a repaint is going be a bit pricey being a fiberglass car and all but does anyone have a ball park figure for a nice "driver" respray? Any other thoughts? Thanks

At least you have a windshield for it... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devilgrin.gif (Reliant Scimitar) Or did that go with the car too?

The picture looks nice... but what do they mean by "improved"?

Opinions differ on what's an improvement, what's not and what's an abomination....

Some things might be very difficult/costly to reverse, too.

78Z... Just heard the newest forecast for Sunday, apparently the snow might be arriving one day earlier then predicted.

well that sucks - we'll just have to see how it turns out I guess. I sold the windshield with the Scimitar so it I bought and it broke I'd be really choked.

some more pics: guy emailed me some more pics:

Paint looks ok from the pics. That steering wheel horn button is ugly, ugly!

And those Toyota floormats... ought to be a big, big discount there for non-originality. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yesnod.gif

One of the many things I do when looking at a car is get up under the dash and see if the wiring looks original or nicely repaired. In one picture it looks like someone has been in there and not sure if those wires are original or not. If not it can be a nightmare trying to figure out what someone else has done especially if something is not working.

Hard to tell but from the pics it looks like the paint isn't too bad. I may well buff out nicely.

Good luck!

I may well be outta line here but: The dashboard is an obvious replacement, so suspicion immediately leads me to Bruce's comment re:wiring. The "stovepipe" airbox is another bit of curiosity, with the vent tube stuffed into the head. Throttle cable, window lift switches, the horn push.... The button is right but a 13" wheel with a toilet plunger for a centre adaptor may rise an eyebrow or two /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

But the PRICE is good enuff to think the "dings" could be overcome, as the paint looks quite "servicable" for the time being. If it runs out well, the "originality" issues can be addressed over time... And they are a much under appreciated Lotus car IMHO. Wonderful GT autos.

Ok I called the guy and here's the skinny

the paint job is a low quality 10 footer.
the engine has been rebuilt with upgraded crank and pistions. 10.25:1 compression. balanced as well.
tranny and diff rebuilt
Its got Dellortos and a custom manifold on it now with a Stromberg head - he'll put the Strombergs back on first though.
new header
rad recored
new brakes and suspension bushings.
new tires
at the rear CV joint conversion using VW bits.
The dash was replaced, wiring apparently not mucked with
generator converted over to a lucas alternator
the interior has a few seams coming apart and centre console has a crack. carpet worn.
needs a voltage stabilizer.

origional chassis so this will need very close inspection

guy talked my ear off for twenty minutes but sounds promising so far! I'm seeing it tues or wed.

Update? Did you ever go see this car?

11-28-2005, 11:00 AM
err ... no. Had to pay wife's traffic fines which came to a shocking huge amount plus her car insurance which was an even more huge amount (because of all her accidents and speeding tickets) so its off for now. Might still go see (I did tell him I don't have the $$$ right now).
