I'm looking to buy, borrow, or steal? an adapter to mount a 948 Bugeye engine to my harbor "'fright" engine stand. Or maybe someone has pans to build such adapter?

It should adjust down to pick up fitting spots on the block.
Be sure that you are near to where the center of the mass will be when built...center point should be above the crank shaft.

Generally, BMC a series engines are bolted onto the stand on the left side of the engine. There are two threaded bosses on the block just above the oil inlet that are use to support generator angle bar.
I am not sure what parts come with a harbor freight stand but my stand came with a plate and some bars. The bars bolt to the block on the threaded bosses and then onto the plate that goes onto the stand.
It looks backward form the "conventional" system of bolting into the transmission bell housing bolts in that the bard go inward from the flat plate as opposed to outward.
I do not have a picture as I have gifted my stand to a friend for his Nissan engine but there are pictures in Vizzards book on tuning the A series engine.
Mounting on the side gives you free access to install most everything except the oil filter and line.
I have built 10 plus engines with this method of attachment.

Adapters are needed for most engines. I have always kept mounts from various engine assembly tools as evry engine isn't totally compatible with the stands. I can put a domestic big block on a stand, but have to use different bolts and angles to mount a Jag 6 or a Triumph 4. Just have to play with them. I have a 1000 lb stand that a Ford 460 fits fine but I have to reinforce for a Jag 6 because the 6 sticks out 2 cylinders farther and tilts the stand.
