I have some play in the upper portion of the steering shaft as if the top bearing is worn. Can anyone tell me how easy this is to replace and what steps are involved.,thanks

I just did this and it's a pain in the butt... but not very complicated. Taking out the steering column is the most involved part I would say. At the very least you need to take the speedo and the tach out so you can get to the mounts. Once the column is out, you can take the bushings out, there is one on each end of the steering column. I installed TRF's poly bushings, which seemed vastly superior to the bushings that came out. If I remember, you can use the steering shaft itself to push the bushings out, which required quite a bit of effort. With a little grease as a lubricant installing the new bushings wasn't nearly as hard as removing them.

While you're at it, I would take this time to replace all the felt that mounts the steering column to the body as well as inspecting the column mount at the firewall. I've heard that those mounts can break due to the stress of drivers using the steering wheel for leverage when exiting the car.

Good luck!

is there a way to replace only the top bushing with the column in place
