Hello all- I'm just about to the point of painting my TR6 and have a couple of questions on paint colors that I'll list below. There are currently 3 coats of paint on it that will be soda stripped so I'm starting from scratch. Any help members can provide is greatly appreciated.
1) Is the windshield frame flat, semi-gloss or gloss black?
2) Is the convertible top frame flat, semi-gloss or gloss black?
3) Is the front grill and frame flat, semi-gloss or gloss black?
4) What about the rear end outer valence- flat, satin, or semi-gloss?
5) What are the PPG or Dupont paint codes for Triumph Signal Red?
6) The car currently has paint applied over what appears to be undercoat on the rocker panels. Is this normal?

Any and all answers to the above or other guidance are greatly appreciated!

Even though you've been on a couple months now I'm glad to be the first to welcome you since you've posted. I'm not sure just what the proper sheen is on the black details, but I know it's not glossy. I wasn't aware that the rocker panels were thus on the 6 like they are on the 7, but some one here can tell you for sure. Having spent 2 days folowing 2 TR6s through Mesa Verde Natl. Monument I can tell you that the black panel on the rear defines the back of the car from a distance and looks much better than the ones that are left body color even though up close it may not be apparent. The Signal Red is a great color and you must post some pics when you get it done so I can drool. Good Luck.

71,
I've posted this one before and it bears repeating. The best colour match that you can get for all three blacks, especially the rear comes right out of a can of "Krylon Semi-Flat" spray paint, WalMart or wherever. Quality paint and the perfect colour match. I sprayed the rear of my car myself in my garage after a professional paint job.

71TR6, all the ones I have done or seen appear to be semi-gloss and I believe this was done to help in washing the car as flat is so chalky it would tend to streak. A very good and as close a match as I could ever get was the satin black by PPG, same color as your gauge surrounds, so take one with you to help. The seals were done in a undercoat which matched this but you will have to let it dry for a while and then paint it as I don't think you will be able to match it. Your paint dealer should be able to get the code for signal red, if not I'm sure someone here can help.

PPG code is 70966. Can't help with the other questions, but I'm sure someone will be along who can.

You should look into Bill Piggot's book, Original TR6 - it's full of the information you need to restore your 6.

Oh, and welcome to the Forum!

What my records show:

Signal Red
Color Code 32
PPG/Ditzler Code 70966
ICI code 2829
Acme/Sherwin Williams Code 2989

Also have seen "Dupont number 8452L H, code 32, color - signal red" but have not verified that.

The Vintage Triumph Register has the paint codes.

http://www.vtr.org/maintain/paint-guide-tr6.html

I'm going with Laurel Green on my '72, and the paint shop I'm working with used the color code I gave them, and did a little research to verify it. They sprayed an old metal panel with the color for me to see before I okayed the color. It's gonna look great!

Welcome, good luck, and keep us posted!
