Sorry, I cant be of much more help regarding soap vs. detergent, but if you have not used 303 before, you'll like it. works great on just about everything, I use it most on my kevlar canoe to prevent fading.

Going back and reading my 303 brochures, I'm surprised they even mentioned using soap and not just their cleaners. Here's a tutorial on cleaning tops by the way: http://autopia.org/forum/guide-detailing/80227-convertible-top-care.html
