.... to get ALL of the money that they've
put into a car?
I sold a nice Cortina for $3900 a while back.
After losing his job,he told me that I could buy
it back for......$5000.He expects to get all of
the money that he paid for it,+ the money it cost
him to come & get it,+ the money's he paid for
storage.
I don't want to borrow a lot of money to get
it back, but I'd like to have the car.I bought it
from the original owner,& told him that I would
not plan on ever selling it.
Our Daughter ran her car out of oil.I didn't
want her driving that Cortina,& I didn't want to
drive it to work (door dings, etc.),so I sold it.
I put my '67 Cortina on eBay,but didn't get
enough for it,so I still have it.
I guess that I'm a sucker for a "sincere -
story" ( the car going to the RIGHT person).
Thoughts?

Swallow your pride and buy it back.

This opportunity will not present itself again to you...and you will regret passing it up.

He expects to get money he paid for coming to get it and for STORAGE?

I think that's crazy.

If he'd actually put the money INTO the car by working on it- doing something to make it better (or even just to maintain it) I'd have more consideration for his position.

But it's no different from when he bought it.

But it's now worth $1100 more ~ over 25%?

Unless he bought it dirt cheap and you're willing to suffer his loss I'd say take a much harder line.... maybe even offer him LESS....

If $5000 is fair market value then you migh justify paying it; but if it's worth that much he could sell it to anyone and not have to come back to you....

Well if he insured the car while he had it, that cost should be passed on to you also. crazyeyes

If I had gotten enough money for my Cortina,
I might have gone through with the deal, but I
didn't get enough.
I sent an email to him, hoping he'd understand.
I don't want to go into more dept to accomodate
this person.
I'd like to feel that "Honesty is the best policy"
I guess I was wrong.
I refuse to borrow a lot of money to please this kind
of person.

Just say "No..."

His position is completely unrealistic and unbelievable: he wants you to pay all of his costs for doing nothing.

Since he's LOST his job, HE's the one in a bad position. And I suspect that's why he wants you to BAIL him out.

If you cannot afford the "debt" decide what you CAN afford and treat that as a reasonable, one and only FINAL offer.

And tell him not to bother you again.

You don't need the grief.

agree agree My way of looking at it is, if he didn't put anything into the car, meaning up grading of some sort, why should you have to pay him more for it than he paid you. Remember, he's the one with money troubles, unless he's a fruit cake, he should take what he paid you for it. JMHO. PJ

Unless he contacts me & lowers the price,I'll
pass on it.I'd be willing to pay $500 more than I
sold it for.The car still needs a few things done to
it,+ I figure that it would cost $1200-$1500 to go &
get it & register it here.
I might just sell the Cortina,& start working
on the Anglia.

Sorry...sounded to me as though you were more connected to the car than you really are.

Values change. You sold it for "X"....he can ask any price he wants for it now.

Just be sure you don't regret a decision made today.
