hey all you 5 speeders, I am doing my 5 speed conversion now and was wondering if I should buy the rivergate slave and hose or just go to NAPA and get orignals. I think the RG is 7/8th bore for 119.00 dollars and napa is 11/16th bore and about 25.00 dollars. any and all input is gladly welcomed thanks.

I use the NAPA one and there is VERY little peddle pressure required (I have a '69 so have that master). I would think that if the bore was bigger then there may be too little pressure required to be comfortable.

I didn't try the original MG unit on mine, and often wonder what it would feel like on the Datsun transmission. Apparently you can't use the Datsun slave on the conversion. Both the MG and Rivergate units require grinding clearance on the transmission housing. With the original slave the hard hydraulic line will need to be shortened. You'll probably have to make an adjustable push rod with the original, which may not be that difficult.

The Rivergate unit still feels a bit strange to me. It's catch and release happens in such a short distance compared with the original.

1981 datsun pickup truck slave works better IMHO.

When I bought my 5 speed from Paul A. I also got a flex hose line from him for the clutch slave. It made installation and bleeding a snap.

The rivergate slave and braided line make for a nice clean install... I am sure there are cheaper slaves available. I find the clutch slave unit work great together and would buy the same again. I also purchased the speedo adapter it also makes for an easy install.

When Paul A. and I put mine in, I re-used the ribcase slave, with Paul A.'s braided hose. The only small problem was bleeding.

Why can't you use Datsun slave and just modify the hose fittings?

I use the Datsun truck slave on mine since I had a hard time putting the original 210 slave on but since then I saw that Ed Perez has the original one on his so I am going to try it on the next conversion (Ed's is a bear to install but it does work).

It was only tough to install because we installed it AFTER the engine and tranny were lowered into the car. It would have been a piece of cake if we would have installed it as the engine and tranny were being lowered in. The flex line would have allowed us to do this. Lesson learned!

Is the bore the same and is that the one used on the 620?

Here is the part no:
NAPA #United 37498
I really don't know what-all it fits, it is what Rivergate calls out.

OK, one more question maybe (not likely). anyway can you use the flex hose from a 1500 midget for the master to the slave. I think I remember someone on here saying that the easy way to bleed the system is to let the slave hang down and let the air rise or something like that thanks.

I have a flex hose on my 5 speed and it made bleeding the slave a quick job. The technique I used was the opposite of what you mentioned. By having the slave above the master the air will rise to the slave and can then be expelled.

The M/C volume is large enough that you can pump the cylinder full of fluid and then push the piston back into the M/C. This will force fluid up the flex hose and back into the reservoir helping to purge the line of bubbles. You just have to be careful not to let the piston pop out, it's definitely a two-man job. Anyway it worked for me today.
