Help. My '96 XJS was recently painted and during that process when they took off the gas cap assembly for painting, they broke that pipe that goes down into the tank and consequently replaced whatever they broke. The only problem is now when I gas up I get a strong smell of gas until the tank falls below about a 1/2 full. At first I thought it was imagination but it is not. I'm not sure but I thought there used to be a black gasket like well inside the gas cap and not attached to the opened end but rather in the well itself. There appears to be some sort of gasket that is affixed to the opened end but this isn't what I was remembering. I'll look forward to whatever response I can get as when I go back to the body shop, I want to be able to explain my dilemna without their rolling their eyes at me. Thanks!

Looks like there should be 1. HHC 3105AA Gasket between filler neck and body. 2. CAC7500 O ring inside gas tank filler neck, and the black "bootie" over the joint is CAC 8703 3, called gaiter. There is also a small hose connection from the filler cap assy that goes to a vent hose. Perhaps they wrenched that loose.... It comes off the filler neck roughly under the hinge for the cap.
Good Luck

If you got it painted where I think you did, take it back and make them fix it! (If its who I think they are a Jag dealer, right?)

You are correct. I wanted to know what to say to them, i.e. why the smell of gasoline. I want to be able to 'splain to them what I think they need to do. If I have good info, they can't argue and say things like perhaps it's always been this way, or are you sure, or whatever. As it is they have already repainted the bonnet because they were some inperfections that could only be cured by a total painting. I thought they could simply sand and touch-up but not so. They have been very cooperative so far.
