Some of you may know we recently lost our beloved dog who was 16 years old. Scout was a wonderful companion.
We're expecting a new female pup sometime in December.
The wife and I have been kicking around some names.
Hearsay
Healey
Sprite
Ginger
LBC (Little Boykin Chocolate)
Molly

I'm leaning toward Sprite. I've always said our pups were wood sprites who, due to their dark brown coats, could appear and disappear like magic in the woods.
Wife likes Hearsay since our pups names have usually reflected some legal significance. (ie Scout from To Kill a Mocking Bird)

Thoughts, suggestions welcomed.

Not much help here. My first dog was named Shane, from the movie of the same title. The second was named Sunday, to the day we got him. My third was Gretchen, she was a dobi-mix, my last was Metiche Dog, Spanish for nosy.

A second thought, if I could imitate the sound of a can of pet food being opened, I would name the dog (or cat) that. It is the only sound that will absolutely guarantee they will come running to you.

My first rule in picking a dogs name is that it has to be a name I don't mind yelling out the back door!

My daughter and I are big music fans, so our last dog was named
"Penny Lane" and our new pup (8 weeks old), a Sheltie, is named "Maggie May".

Sometimes a dog will just have a personality that speaks their name. I know, corny but true. Good luck in a name and a new puppy for the holidays is about the best gift you can give yourselves. I might think about Noel or Kringle but then that's how my mind goes... angel

My first puppy {border Collie} was naned Tinker. YEA you guessed it my parents called him Stinker but I couldn`t say the S`s in those days {i was only three}
Then came Duchess {pickineese/Pug cross}. She was a great dog! She gave many offspring of which I had no problem adopting out when the time came.
We now have a giant Chinese Pug His registered name is Rollie Pollie Ollie {the kids named him} We call him "Fat Boy" or "Rolls" He`s huge for a Pug, to give you an idea almost as big as your average English Bull Dog.
Animals have their own characteristics and traits don`t worry, once you have him/her around a day or two the appropriate name will come to you.

I hear THAT! I always say there are two commands, that if mastered, make the dog/owner experience fun. Come....no matter what.
No...followed by whatever word is appropriate. wink
I'm a firm believer in training. All our pups get started early and get formal training at 6 months followed by more formal training at about one year. Refresher courses are daily life.
I love going into nice hotels in the business suit with my dog
healing beside me on leash. Stroll up to the desk and place the leash on the counter as the dog sits without any verbal command.
Sign in and NEVER mention the dog. I've yet to be questioned or refused a room even at Hiltons and Ritz Carltons.
If my dog isn't welcome I figure the place isn't worthy of
them or me.

I agree. Wait until you get him/her. Let him nose around a bit and see what fits. Our big, goofy, chocolate lab is called Barney...like Barney Fife. He really tries, he's well meaning and likable, he pouts when he doesn't get his way but gets over it quickly and he's a good friend with a good heart...but just kinda goofy. We had him for about a week before we realized who he was! LOL!

P.S. You might also consider "Rudy" for the Holidays!

Whatever it is ya choose, don't go over two syllables. We've always had cats, MY cats come when called by name. Merlyn (14 years) will "sit" on command. Nimrod (12), not so much... his was antithetic. misnomer. wink

Names were given after some observation of their traits. Both these guys are all black, short-hair. "Dimwad" hasn't a rudder, would fall asleep with his face in the food dish from the beginning and is now the size of a bowling ball. Merlyn has a GREAT deal of Siamese in him, from kittenhood could be in two places at once (or so it would seem).

Haven't had one to name "Underfoot" yet... laugh

This is making the rounds again and I got it yesterday, thought it sort of fit this whole discussion.

What NOT to name your new dog:

Everybody I know who has a dog usually calls him "Rover" or "Spot".

I call mine Sex. Now, Sex has been very embarrassing to me. When I went to the City Hall to renew the dog's license, I told the clerk that I would like a license for Sex.

He said, "I would like to have one too!" Then I said, "But she is a dog!"

He said he didn't care what she looked like. I said, "You don't understand. ... I have had Sex since I was nine years old."

He replied, "You must have been quite a strong boy."

When I decided to get married, I told the minister that I would like to have Sex at the wedding.

He told me to wait until after the wedding was over. I said, "But Sex has played a big part in my life and my whole world revolves around Sex."

He said he didn't want to hear about my personal life and would not marry us in his church. I told him everyone would enjoy having Sex at the wedding.

The next day we were married at the Justice of the Peace. My family is barred from the church from then on.

When my wife and I went on our honeymoon, I took the dog with me. When we checked into the motel, I told the clerk that I wanted a room for me and my wife and a special room for Sex.

He said that every room in the motel is a place for sex. I said, "You don't understand. ... Sex keeps me awake at night."

The clerk said, "Me too!"

One day I entered Sex in a contest. But before the competition began, the dog ran away. Another contestant asked me why I was just looking around. I told him that I was going to have Sex in the contest. He said that I should have sold my own tickets.

"You don't understand," I said, "I hoped to have Sex on TV." He called me a show off.

When my wife and I separated, we went to court to fight for custody of the dog. I said, "Your Honor, I had Sex before I was married but Sex left me after I was married."

The Judge said, "Me too!" Last night Sex ran off again. I spent hours looking all over for her. A cop came over and asked me what I was doing in the alley at 4 o'clock in the morning.

I said, "I'm looking for Sex." -- My case comes up next Thursday. Well now I've been thrown in jail, been divorced and had more darn troubles with that dog than I ever foresaw.

Why just the other day when I went for my first session with the psychiatrist, she asked me, "What seems to be the trouble?" I replied, "Sex has been my best friend all my life but now it has left me for ever. I couldn't live any longer so lonely." and the doctor said, "Look mister, you should understand that sex isn't a man's best friend so get yourself a dog."

Well the pup we wanted is safely tucked in at Point-o-View.
We went with Sprite for the name.
Breeder has been calling her that for a couple of weeks now. Ten hours of driving to pick her up. We ALL are exhausted.
Scout and the wife are crashed on the bed.
Dang puppies are cute.
Her official Boykin Spaniel Society name is Dovewood's Sprite.
She's just 7 weeks old but has already been playing with dove
wing drags. "Official" schooling starts at 6 months.

Pics tomorrow. She's a cutie pie. I didn't shave this morning so she'd get some rough face licks for starters. I plan on making her a daddy's girl but she sticks like glue to the wife...for now. Her Mom and Pop are field champs so she
should be a quick learner.
