My datsun 210 trasmission is starting to get really noisy or at least I think it's noisy. All the gears shift in smoothly but 2,3,5 gears seem really high pitched but 4th gear is quiet.

I haven't checked the transmission oil in sometime so maybe it might be low. But I really hope I don't have to get the the transmission pulled out and rebuilt. The PO did not have the transmission rebuilt...i wish the PO did.

So is it time for a rebuild on the transmission? eeek!

Hard to say. Depends on exactly how noisy it is, and what you find out when you check the oil. Do the easy things first. Not all problems are serious, but we tend to think they are at the outset.

It is normal for 4th to be the most quiet. It is not really a gear but a straight 1 to one lock of the input shaft to the output shaft. All the others have gear meshes. There is not much insulation in a midget and you are closer to the tranny than in most cars (that is why the shifter is shortened). With the top up the gear whine is more noticeable but not near so much as in the old 4 speed.

I would check the oil level really quick before you toast that thing! They are tough but not completely unbreakable!

Thanks all. What's the easiest way to fill the transmission? If needed I am going to use Valvoline Synthetic gearlube.

You can put the oil in an empty grease gun or attach a hose to the end of the bottle and squeeze it out.

I bought one of those cheapo plastic pumps that screw into the top of an oil bottle and pump it in- really easy.

I went one better and ran a long hose(24")from the engine compartment down to the tranny and pumped it from up top....Let gravity help a little.
