When I took my hood apart to clean, repair and repaint I noticed that most of the bonded on flanges were loose. I went ahead and removed them since I figured I'd need to rebond them anyway, and it allowed me to clean the surface rust under them. Now that I'm getting close to reassembly, anyone have any suggestions on what to use to reattach them to the hood center section?

Hood (USA) or Bonnet (Eng) or Hood (Eng) or Top (USA)? If you are talking about the bonnet assembly, did you notice any kind of tach welds on the flanges? I don't remember any adhesives back then for assembly.

Tach (USA) or Rev-Counter (Eng)?

Or maybe Tack?

Sorry, couldn't resist!

OK, bonnet....

On my 3.8 E the flanges attached to the fenders for the rear wheel well panel are spot weleded on. All the flanges on the center section were bonded on. Not flush to the center but with a bead perhaps 1/32 to 1/16 thick. appears to be original, I've have the car 25 years and it doesn't seem to have been apart before. I've also see others at shows that have this feature.

Why not contact a body shop supply house and get some structural adhesive. I know that there are different cure times as well as different strengths. I would talk to a salesman that should know the differences, and could recommend the correct product for that use. One thing I am sure of, the stuff now will be a whole lot better than what Jaguar used. I think that the "glue" might be a great way to install repair panels on cars. No welding, and should be easier to completely rustproof the repair. Good Luck

I used a two part epoxy when I redid the bonnet on my 68 XKE. Thats been almost 10 years ago and its still holding. No signs of cracking or loose panels.

SEM makes some stuff called "Multi-purpose Panel Adhesive". Great stuff.
