I'm trying to attach the speedo cable to my 5 speed trans., (Rivergate kit). Can't see where it goes! Car is up on jacks--just can't see it.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks...

Underneath, if your sitting in the driver position with the box to your right, it's on the right side, halfway underneath, just slightly forward (but below) of the gear stick.
Let me know if you need a pic.

If you look down the Right side of the shifter boot hole its at about five oclock . Almost out of site facing to 11oclock. you will need small hands to put it on if its already in the car.
try and route the cable angle as shallow as possile as it could bind.

OOPs I must have been sitting on the wind shield

Thanks Guys...Speedometer cable is in the car and routed into the speedo. It would have been much easier to have done it ahead of time but...the job is done.

Next step is to put the fluids in the car, hook up the electrics to the distributor and see if the engine goes VROOM!---that's tomorrow. Now it time to an English Dark Ale...a Hobgoblin.

Good luck Bruce!
You're a day ahead of me.
How tight was getting the motor and tranny back in?

Barry,

Very tight. Took a lot of cursing an struggling to get it in. Some people seem that they had an easier time..I hope you do.

What are those two wires for shown in your photo? Backup Lights?

Let me know how you do. Good luck!--don't forget beer.

Yes, back-up lights.
There are two on the tranny, and three on the Midget, so I guess I'll go without.
I'm really tempted to remove the upper fron valence to get a shallower angle.
Keep us posted on the start-up!

I thought those wires are for a neutral safety switch.

On the Datsun trans you should have three switchs; one for backups, one for neutral switch and one for 4th gear. The only one that you MUST remove is the backup one (naturally).

Tight is an understatement.
I had to bend the area beneath the heater, the tunnel just aft of the gear lever, and getting those gearbox mounting bolts in was just a plain nightmare.
It's over now, all in, nothing rubs anymore, and beer was drunk.

I put my trans & engine in a few months ago so I forgot some of the parts of that nightmare. You reminded me of what a gigantic PITA it was. Glad to hear you're done.

I never noticed a neutral switch on mine. Where is it. That would be a nice safety feature to hook up to keep from starting in gear.

I've got a Datsun transmission along with my Nissan motor.
No speedo cable installed.
Are you guys using the MG cable or a different cable?
It would be nice to get my speedo connected.
Any help would be appreciated.

The Rivergate lit includes a new custome cable with right angle drive. At least mine did but I asked for the whole Enchilada. They do sell those items seperately and if I recall it was only like another $125 for the rt angle and new longer cable.

Just a quick follow up question.
Is it normal for the shifter to be a little left of center?

Any other sources for the cable?
$125 seems a little steep unless it indeed is a custom made cable.

Yes, in fact I had to grind a bit of the lip off of the aperture in the tunnel so that it didn't go "clank" when shifting into 1st and 2nd.

Yeah, I used the engine lift, to gently persuade it away from the yoke.
I'm not ~that~ far over, but enough that is was grinding the yoke when pushing it.
Thanks Trevor, I feel better about that then.

I was wondering about the position of the shift lever myself. Good to hear that's where it's "supposed" to be.

Bruce, what slave/master combination are you using in your car?

If you do the Datsun 5-speed conversion, a good way to re-center the shifter and use the Sprite knob is to cut down the Datsun shifter leaving a 1" nub. Then measure to taste and cut off the Sprite shifter. Weld the Sprite shifter to the RIGHT side of the datsun stub and you'll have everything back in line. Paul did this for me and it works great.

Trevor, I'm using the slave that Rivergate provides and a new clutch master. I'm converting my car to dual brake lines, and a clutch master.

OK, I'm using the 3/4" brake/clutch combo unit and I'm not sure what to use for a slave. I have a nissan 3/4" slave cylinder that I'm going to try make work. It was only $12 at my local NAPA so I thought it would be worth a shot.

When the tranny was in my Midget I had the stock clutch MC and 1275 slave, and it was an easy pedal, but you had to but it all the way on the floor.
