Hi Guys

I hope that the Emperor won't mind me hijacking the site to warn all the Brits that log on here from time to time, that there is a move afoot to restrict and possibly ban old cars from British Roads. The exact extent of the age and restriction is unknown, but it is mooted that cars older than 10 years could be affected and that it would apply to cities. This then applies to the classics for sure. Below is an extract from Auto Express, but I first saw it on the Austin Healey Club UK site. I have since warned the TR's, Morgans, TVR,s Austin Sevens and Volvos about it.

Brits - Fill your boots, especially if you live in the cities, otherwise you could find yourselfs looking at your cars going no where on your drives.

Regards

Bob

The deadline for joining the petition is 18 March, and at the time of going to press more than 20,000 protesters had already signed up. Log on to the site at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/Classic-Cars if you want to add your name to the list.

You and me and only some 21,000 + others so far. Poor showing me thinks, but that might be down to government stealth. I am trying to offset that.

I trust that you were protesting with me and not at my posting British problems on an American site. LOL

Is this an American site?

Basil is in America, and I surmise he's strongly patriotic...but I think the BCF transcends nationality.

Of course there's the "British" car itself to consider in this question. I'm no philosopher, and I realize the majority of posters are in the US, but it struck me as odd to have this referred to as an American site...

Bob, thanks for posting this.

What's the nature of the legislation? What is the intended purpose of it? Is it aimed at reducing pollution?

Strange, considering all the classic Brit/Euro cars cruising around the British highways.

Can we in the US write to someone in the UK to protest? It could be the first "domino" in a long sequence and needs to be stopped. In a country that revears antiquities this seems strange to me. (and they will flood the US with all of their LBC's and droop the value here).
If it is pollution maybe the should look to all the other major sources of pollution over there. Besides it all blowes over to France anyway. Sorry, this is very serious, can we help? We've had simular problems here in California and we provented it for the time being by contacting our politicians.

The same people behind it that bought up the patents to the 100mpg carb and the miracle AIDs drug, hmm, maybe they killed Kennedy also.

This is what happens when " politically correct " emotions and feelings are used by politicians to form public policy !
I'll bet they don't even offer any scientific proof of why they propose such a thing.
It is certainly happening a lot over here on this side of the pond also.
All you can do is vote the bums out and make your " displeasure "
known in the meantime. Good luck putting a stop to it !

I know little of the legislation, but I doubt modern manufacturers would object to a law requiring everyone to replace their car after only ten years or so. It's a capitalist conspiracy! Someone tell Moss et. al.

I must say it does seem far fetched considering, but I am persuing other lines to endevour to establish if there is any truth in it.
The petition exists, but as someone pointed out to me, there was one to appoint Jeromy Clarkson as Prime minister.

yes And yet another reason to move to the US.

From time to time we also have some legislator's that feel they can meet Federal guidelines on "smog" restrictions by removing a few classic cars from the roadways. So ridiculous.

agree

News Story about a proposal in Edinburgh.

But I wouldn't want ot take ANY car into the city centre there, and if I did I couldn't find any place to park it anyway....

Why go to Edinburgh when there's so many, so much nicer driving roads to be driven so close... masochism.

James, while this news is particularly disturbing to collectors it gives one the perfect excuse to run out and purchase a new gt-2 Porsche. jester

I don't particularly worry about my "Classics", its the daily driver old clunker that's still awaiting (if ever) recognition as a Classic that's likely going to get hit by this nonsense.

Edinburgh council is notoriously anti-car....
