Hi all,
I know, sports cars should not have cup holders.
But what about coffee cup holders, to all those coffee drinkers like me.

I have been tinkering with different ways to install a cup holder. Somewhere that it will be out of the way, yet open up to become a cup holder. I am thinking of installing it under the glove box on my BJ8, flush with the front lip.

Car companies are always coming up with amazing "Swiss Jack Knife" cup holders. Look here says the sales man. You want a cup holder? He pushes on the simple looking flat piece of plastic and it opens up (like a kids transformer toy) to accommodate all of the following items... at the same time. Large and small cup holder, 7-11 Big Gulp cup holder, cell phone holder, flower holder, pen holder, pad holder, wallet, purse, clutch, handbag holder, trash container and doubles as a third row seat.

So I have been looking at the holders these car manufactures are impressing us with and wondering if I could use one of theirs in my Healey. Of course it will take a little modification to attach it, but I think it could be done. .

Any MacGyver's pulled this off yet?
Ideas?
Roger

Roger, I have seen a nice one offered by Griots Garage, it folds up flat when not being used........apparently it is installed in some new Mercedes models?

ausmhly, try looking at some that are sold by aircraft supply they use some nice designs! and yes they make the cup holders stealthy as well.

I have a great one, it is a unit that has a bottom edge that slipe under your floor mat and that holds it into place. No bolting, no screws and can be removed real easy.

I was a gift from my father, I can check to see where he bought it if needed...

I don't know about your " cup holder " Keoke.
At first it " sounds " good. After I think about it some, I realize that it can be a very expensive cup holder that may not be around when you are looking for it and may become jealous of the other cup holders you have and not want to work when you want it to....
I think I'll look around for a less expensive solution for my car !

Hi Roger, I found the ideal cupholder. It wedges in between the passenger seat and the tranny cover but doesn't interfere with the E brake. It holds two cups and a small space in between for coins etc. It also is removable, very easy to install and can be stored in the trunk or behind the seats. Best of all, It only cost $5.00 from Walmart and is black in color.

Keoke,
I thought you were talking about three different colored " cup holders " instead of one that has interchangable colors.

I guess that kind of cup holder that you have is not as " expensive " as the kind I was thinkin about !

Johnny,
I am off to wally world to check out their cup holders. Thanks for the tip. I'll need one tomorrow as I am going with the local MG club on a trip down to eastern NC and meet up with Coastalman and Steve Byers. I guess I'll add my BJ8 to his registry while I am there. I'll try to get some pictures.

Hi Johnny,
How's about posting a picture of it installed.

Except for your last sentence, I thought you may be adding on Keoke's comment about a cup holder, lol.

Which by the way Keoke, let's us all see a little deeper into how you process information. Good to see you always have your thinkin cap on.

Naw ED, Not expensive at all. You make a small down payment and then throw "U" check in for the rest of "U" life. I tried initially to get three different ones but they got some kinda funny law out here in Kalifornia that only let you have one. I been thinking about moving to Utah and trying to repurchase them. But if you say they be expensive I guess I just better let well enough alone.--Keoke-

Sorry, I can't post pictures anymore. My 'puter doesn't have the right software (mozilla?? or something). But you shouldn't have any problem locating it at Walmart in the auto section. It's called the "Wedgie" and really does work well for a Healey. It might not hold the GIANT size drink but most others ride okay. I have a BN7 model and it fits nicely between the passenger seat and tranny tunnel. You do have to reach back but not too far. I love it.

How about a Canek Back slung over the back of your seat? No stopping, no eyes off the road. Not as good as Keoke but you don't have to buy it dinner.

Hey TH,
Your my hero.
Reminds me of the saying KISS.
Just like me to over engineer somethng, make things more complicated then they need to be.
So per TH suggestion, here's what I'll be using for the cup holder. The same cup holder I use when I go mountain biking..."Camelbak"

I have considered putting one in the place where the sideshift used to be. It would be pretty easy to mould one into the aftermarket fiberglass tranny tunnel. After all the carpet kit has a bound round hole there already. This of course only applies to a sideshift car with a Smitty conversion in place.

Roger,

Looking at photo number 8, did you attach your cup holder to the under side of the glove box ( cardboard ) ? What did you use to fasten it ?
...... Almost forgot, Nice job !
