You should have a blank cover plate in your collection of bits for the big one. Not sure as to the round hole tho. Did it ever have one of those "hang down" dealer added A/C units in it?

I had the same large oval shaped hole on my '68 E-type body. There was a fiberglass panel that covered it. The Martin Robey shell that I bought didn't have the access hole. The small round hole, I believe, had a grommet for wiring to pass thru to the engine compartment.

Basil..you figure it out....I'm thinking the oblong hole is typically used for A/C hoses...

I do have a cover for the large oval hole and have learned that its for accessing the starter motor more easily if needed. The smaller hole remains a mystery however. Doc - never had air. Number 6 - If it is for wiring, I'd like to know what wiring and to where? I'm beginning to think maybe its an artifact for a right-hand drive car that just needs to be plugged for a left-hand drive; but that's just a theory.

I'm sorry, that I can't say. I sold off my Jag project uncompleted and all my notes, photos & sketches that I made went with it.

Now, this is just a WAG, but:
This is just above where the tunnel bolts down, and it is on the right side.
The Tachometer Generator is on the RR part of they cylinder head, mounted to the rear of the inlet camshaft.

What are the chances the tach wiring comes right off the generator, through a grommet, and to the tach?
These are the same design as a MKII, which is totally self-contained and isolated, so separate wires would not be uncalled for?

And, that said, Barretts lists:

Hole Plugs
R151 5/8" Hole Plug (each) Used on the firewall (as required)
R151A 23/32" Diameter Hole Plug (each) (2 req) Used beneath bonnet latch on firewall
R151B 5/16" Diameter Hole Plug (each) Used on
firewall for filling redundant plate holes (as required)
R152 1" Hole Plug (each) Used in various locations (as required)

So, maybe these are just spurious holes?

Sorry Tony and Basil,

I went to Daytona Beach last week and just got home tonight. Will try to look at my car this week. I promised Basil a couple of weeks ago I would do that.

BTW- I brought a TR250 back with me. It followed it home.

Hey!
I know what that hole is for!
The very rare 2.4L version of the XKE!
That hole is for the choke cable for the twin downdraught Solexes!
