Sweet! (9:1 compression is pretty good! Some of the older Jags only had 8:1 My E-Type (4.2 Litre) is 9:1 also.

Lovely car! I love the 'S' Types, better than the MkII and just as good-looking. Only thing I prefer about the MkII is the styling on the rear.

Basil, and what exactly is 9:1 compression? higher compression I suppose?

Steve, yes that's the styling Q that most people like in the MK-II but if you look closely, the rear wheel openings in the S type are the same as in the E type, and so is the Independent Rear Suspension. The S type is pure Jaguar all over.

Yes, it is higher compression. Of course these days new cars have much higher than that, but in its day, 9:1 was pretty high. It basically means that the air/gas mixture compresses to a volume 9 times smalller than the beginning volume when the piston completes the compression stroke. In other words, it is the ratio of volume between the top of the piston and the top of the cylinder head combustion chamber as measures at the bottom of the stroke verson the volume at the top of the compression stroke.

Basil, thanks for the explanation. That's why I don't mess with engine internals or transmission internals! it's way over my head! But ask me about the rest and I can handle the job.

Bibber, it looks better in person, the photo doesn't do justice. That 'staunch look' is what they're trying to capture with the new 2008 'S' type.
