Removing front hub

I'm about to remove the castlated nut so that I can pull the hub. Anybody know what size the nut is before I go out and by a big enough socket? It looks like about an inch and a quarter.

Also I noticed there is no grease retainer in there. Does the retainer actually serve any useful purpose? Car seems to have been fine without it for many years.

It's actually called a 'dust cap' or 'dust cover,' and the idea is to keep, well, dust (and dirt and water) out of the bearings (grease should pretty much stay put on the bearings). It's a good idea to have them though, as you've found, if you're lucky not enough dirt will get in the bearings to cause a problem.

ONTOH,most parts lists list it as a Grease cup which is primarily used to keep excess grease in the hub bearings from creeping out and contaminating your wire wheels.

But I bet it keeps a lot of water and dirt out of the bearings too.

I sit corrected.
