Why I don't drive my Healey to Mexico [any more]

Was driving the US Southwest a few years ago and decided to make a quick side trip into Mexico (Hwy. 2 ('dos?') along the AZ/Mexico border). Came up to a road block manned by Federales and guess who they decided to stop and search (hint: it's a rhetorical question). They were pretty menacing at first, but eventually realized we were too dumb to be smugglers (maybe because I described my spare fuel pump as a 'fuelo pumpo,' and the spare water pump as an 'agua pumpo'). When I reached for my wallet to produce my driver's license--SOP in the States--they though I was offering a bribe.

La Mordida or something like that.
SOP for travel south of the border.
Spent a lot of time in Colombia...roadblocks by Federales...had to pay your "bribe" to get through.
This side of the border, they have cameras that take photos of your plates and mail you a bill for whatever...tolls, parking, who knows what else.
At least they keep track of you on a high level.

It's a dang shame. Up here in the NE we don't have too much of those kind of issues. since I am planning a trip around the country soon you'd think I would be assembling a list of the all the places in the country that I want to see. Insead I am starting to assemble a list of all the places I don't intend to go to. Dang shame. Not the same USA I grew up in.
Please don't take this as prejudicial. My reasons are lack of leadership and lawlessness.

My dad wouldn't let me drive my MGB down to my cousin's in Florida in the 70's, he figured I'd be arrested in the South!
