I have ordered 72 Spoke 5" Dayton wheels

Now I'm working on the tyre size and I was thinking about 195/60/15 (As there are a lot more choices in that size), but Google is telling me that the widest I should go on a 5" is 185 - therefor 185/65/15

Does anyone have any advise here?

Yeah, 185 is about max for a 5" rim, but many guys have put larger on and swear they're OK. I like to stick to the recommendations. I've got 5.5" Dunlop wires on my TR3 and am running 185/70-15 Vredestien Sprint Classics. Great tire, but not cheap...about $160 per.

I have Dayton 5" 72 spoke wheels (mine are the chrome tubeless ones) and I've got 205/70R15 tires on them which is what my wirewheel guy recommended as the equivalent of 185/80R15 in radius and not too wide for the tire. They fit fine, just dont go over 205. 185 is the 'stock' size for a 5 inch rim, but 205s fit just fine.

EDIT: He actually liked the 205s better than the 185s because being wider, the side wall was a bit further out from the wire wheel itself, and helped prevent accidental curb rash on the rim.

I have 195/65R15 Michelin Primacy MXV4's on Dayton 5" 60 spoke wires. I felt the 72 spoke was a bit of overkill.
I think the diameter is close to stock so the speedometer (if perfectly rebuilt) has very little error. That's the theory anyway.
My presures are set at 26lbs front and 30lbs rear.

-longstone tyres has michelin 165/sr15 for BP$97 delivered to your house
-they fit and drive perfectly
-i took off my brand new vredesteins and installed the michelins
-way nicer feel, handling, look

-these are on my tr3 60 spoke and my 1970 morgan 72 spoke and are definitely the right size for these applications

165 seems a bit skinny for a 5" wheel. I run Vreds 185/15s on my 5" 72 spokes.

I got them from Euro-Tire. Quote at that time was "The Sprint Classics's in that size cost $143 ea. plus 33.05 per tire for freight. Call 800 631 0080 to place an order."

Summit Racing and, of course, Coker are competitive sources for these.
