Fuel guage interchangeable between AH, MG, TR?

I finally got my 1960 BT7 on the road and am cleaning up details. The fuel gauge is giving me fits and I discovered on taking it apart there was a broken wire. Bought one and discovered it too doesn't work. My question is: Are the Smith's gauges mechanically compatible between the AH, MGA and Triumph? In other words, if they fit in the dash hole will they work? They all look the same in pictures and seem to be the same size?

I looked at the fuel gauge listing at Moss Motors. They all have different part numbers, which probably means they are not the same.

Only the size are the same, it must be re-calibrated to work on AH-
You could follow the https://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/et213.htm
https://mgaguru.com/mgtech/electric/fg_02.htm articles
and repair one of the oldest- test the fuel gauge before to beginning the work, reconnecting the wire in place- if possible

by the way, I am interested to buy one old -also if in not working conditions - but with the clock face, in good conditions.

A very interesting question!

My fuel guage was missing so I sourced an ex MG fitted unit as it looked identical.

I wonder what makes them differ internally? and how can I modify my MG unit to work with my BJ8?

their different for a reason since your in the uk give ah spares a call I'm sure they can answer your question I think it has to do with the ohms of the sending unit

Talk about making things complicated. You would think that BMC would try and standardise on as many parts as possible and use the same unit across the entire range?
I will try and work it out. AH Spares will just try and sell me a new one for £100.

I goofed mine up while apart for cleaning. A couple of coils of the fine wire came off the cores and it started to get unraveled. I very carefully with fingers and a toothpick rewound the loose coils and then anchored them in place with super glue. When I put it back in the car it wasn't accurate at all. So I started adjusting the position of the coils in their slides. I got good registration but then as the fuel level changed the gauge became unreliable. I made a stick with markings to tell where the full level was and as I drove the car and used up the fuel in the tank I kept adjusting the gauge to reflect what the stick showed me. After about 4 or 5 adjustments thru 2 tanks of gas the gauge is now accurate. At least as accurate as it ever was. Dave.

FWIW - The main difference between Bruce's and mine is his goes into the well at the bottom and mine stays on the side.
Mine was made by adding water a 2 gallons at a time to a straight spare tank, leveled on sawhorses.
