TR2/3/3A TR3 paint color

All,

I'm not sure if anyone can help or not, but I'm looking for some touch up paint for my 3A. The car was originally red, but when the PO restored it in '05, he changed the color to BRG. I actually bought the car from a dealer who had purchased it from the PO prior to him moving out of state. Because I am unsure if the PO used a Triumph color or not, I'm struggling to find a match (purchased two cans of BRG and they were darker than my car). Does anyone know of a way I can match the paint and get some touchup (preferably in a spray can because I have brake fluid damage to the paint on my scuttle)?

Here is a pic of the car:

Thanks for any help,

Best bet is to take it to a quality paint store/shop that can shoot a picture of it to match it. Most can sell cans or put in a spray container.

Hi Bill - that is a GREAT looking TR!

I had a similar paint problem, so I took the spare wheel cover off the back, and went to my local NAPA.

They computer-matched the color, and sold me a couple spray cans of acrylic enamel.

So far it's been a perfect match.

The Willimantic NAPA can do it, as can the NAPA down in Plainfield. Putnam NAPA can't - they send to Plainfield.

Hope this helps.

Many thanks for the advice guys! I'll take it to Napa this weekend. I've already spent close to $100 on the guessing game - I wish I had asked earlier!

Do you know if they can put the paint in a touch up pen too?

I didn't ask about a touch-up pen; ask them when you get there and let us know.

By the way, if no pen, spray into a paper (not plastic) cup. Use an artist paint brush to do the work. Work fast!

Lots of BRGs in the world -- Triumph's seemed bluer, Jag's seemed darker.

For me the real BRG will always be the color of Jim Clark's Lotus 38 (just as Sean Connery will always be the real James Bond). I guess 1965 made an impression on me.

What you have looks very close to that Lotus color -- a very nice TR BTW.

Hello, one thought would be to go through paint chips for a match. The other thought would be to go to you tube and type in BRG and see what cars come up with a similar color match to yours. There are many different shades of BRG. The last option would be go to a paint store and have them scan the color with a scanner and come up with a close match and have it tinted from there. The big auto paint stores have scanners or spectrum analyzers.

Cheers!

Thanks Vern!

As Tom suggested, I plan to bring my wheel cover to Napa this Saturday and see if they can computer match the color. I hope to go to the Day of Triumph at the Larz Anderson Auto Museum on July 29th (https://larzanderson.org/events/lawn-events/lawn-event-list/day-of-triumph-2/) and compare any other BRG's on the cars there.

I appreciate the input from all....as I do for the other issues I've run into.

Issues? We don't have issues here; we have opportunities! :jester:

Odd, my wife tells me I have "issues"!

I'll have to correct her and let her know I'm an "opportunity".

Well, Napa in Plainfield was a bust...the lady behind the counter looked at me like I had three heads. Fortunately, the mechanic that does most of my work on my day to day cars was there picking up parts. He pointed me to the guy that does all his bodywork and after visiting him this guy hooked me up with Providence Lacquers in Norwich, CT. Long story short, the guy at PL scanned my car, whipped me up a spray can and 4oz touchup can and I was out of there in less than 1/2 hour. I applied some when I got home and it appears to be an exact match.

Thanks again, I appreciate the "opportunity".

Bill, it's been years since this post. Was wondering how you solved your dilemma as I am in the same place with at TR3 of virtually the same color.

Take it to a PPG or DuPont supplier. They will match it, but it is not cheap. You stand a better chance of winning the lottery than of finding a particular variant of BRG.

I did! I took the car to Providence Lacquer's and they scanned my car and matched the color. Initially, the color was perfect, but as time goes on its seems to be a little darker. It will get me by until I have the car resprayed (the paint is now 12 years old and road chips from driving makes her a definite driver).

This is what I should have done with one of my panels so the shop that painted my car would have painted my TR4 the ride shade of BRG. Oh well...I got the lighter "later TR4" BRG.
