TR2/3/3A TR3 THROTTLE RETURN SPRING?

radiobroadcast

My TR3 is an old race car and lots of components were removed including the throttle return spring. It looks like the spring was attached to a bell crank at the rear of the linkage. Can anyone confirm is that was the case; also where did the other end of the spring anchor to? ( A picture would be really nice to get)

Thanks to all

Aloha Doug,

On my TR3A the return spring is mounted on the right hand side of the car. One end is connected to the arm on the throttle cross shaft that runs across the top of the bell housing from left to right. The other end is attached to a small metal tab (much like a hook) on the bulkhead over the bell housing.

Here's a pic. The top arrow shows the hole where the spring goes in the fulcrum. The bottom arrow shows the approximate location of the tab that the other end of where the spring goes. It's a little further down and right near the edge.

If you have to stretch the spring with with one hand while you hold it in place with another hand and guide into the hole with the third hand...

...you might find that a length of dental floss or a length or wire looped around the hook makes the install more manageable.

Thanks for all of your help everyone. Incredibly fast and helpful comments. I located the tab. It had been pounded down sometime in 1959 when they prepared the car for racing. A bit of hammering with a sdrewdriver and it was as good as new.. New spring works great- Maybe I can finally get it to idle properly.

Don't worry too much if it won't always come down to the same idle speed every time. For the last 52 years, I tuck the toe of my right foot under the pedal on my 1958 TR3A to pull the pedal back so the idle comes down a bit more.

:iagree:
That just seems to be "life in the TR3."

I got really tired of that in my TR3A ... replacing the throttle linkage pivots plus rebushing the carbs solved the problem. Idle rpm still wanders a bit, but it's always against the stops (lifting the pedal makes no difference).

Aloha Art,

That is a really nice looking throttle shaft bushing. Is it a custom fabrication or available off the shelf?

Those are self aligning bushings that I got from McMaster. The one on the other side has a different diameter bronze bush (larger) so I could accommodate the adjoining piece (the piece that pins the pedal to the shaft) without the step in it. It makes disassembly in the car with the engine in place a much easier project if I ever have to replace the McMaster pieces.

Edit: Here's a couple of pics of the other side...
