Wheel adapters

What do you gents think of these?

Do they work as expected. Any experience using this type of adapter on a Spit?

what do you want to do? If you want to fit different wheels then I suggest just getting the wheels to fit the car. I do not particularly think that adapters are a good idea.

I have been thinking of getting adapters for my 66 spit so I can run wires. What do you guys think about that idea? Also a bad one?

Wheel adapters are just not a good idea, they changes the geometry and causes stress and are dangerious. Try a nice set of Panasport wheels and have something that will improve the appearence of your car, that is in my never to be humble opinion.

waltesefalcon: If you want to run wires, get the hubs and wire wheels as a combo. I don't know why you'd want wires but that I'll just leave alone.

I just like the way Wires look, and since I won't be racing the MkII I thought wires would look really good on it.

I'm sorry, I often filter my opinions through my competition filter. Wire Wheels can be beautiful and are a fair bit of maintenance, but they do look good on some cars.

I agree with Jim, wire wheels are pretty, but a lot of maintenance. (Then I hate cleaning cars, and detest trying to keep wires clean) You need to keep the splines greased, and that leaks out onto the wheel, more cleaning. The only good point I did like as they were quick to remove. (As long as they are greased!)

No reason to apologize Jim. Just an idea I have, I'd wind up powder coating any wires I put on it just so I wouldn't have to spend hours cleaning them.

Go for the wires...they do look snazzy, and the smaller size of the spit makes them a bit less of a problem than those on the big Healy's. As for adaptors, these can cause increasing damage to the front end, starting with additional stress loads on your bearings. Worst case senario: I saw a guy rap a curb with a set...it should have dented the rim or blew a tire at best, but instead the adaptor broke, wheel rolled under the frame and caused a mess.He was lucky to get off that easy, he could have rolled it!!!

Walter, just remember that you have to be able to adjust the spokes on wire wheels. If you powdercoat the entire wheel, the spokes become much less adjustable (coating fills exposed threads) and trying to adjust them could damage the coating.

If you take them apart to powdercoat them, . . . well, I'll just ask it--have you ever taken wire wheels apart and then tried to put them back together? That is a minimum of 48 spokes x 4 wheels = 192 spokes or 72 x 4 = 288 spokes! Also, if you take them apart, the spoke hole diameters decrease by the thickness of the coating.

Just a thought--have you priced good used or new chrome wires? Might be a better solution in the end. Hope I didn't rain too hard on your parade. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

The funny thing is that most people think that the wire wheels on TRs and MGs are weaker than the steel disks...but in actuality, the competition kits from Triumph and MG spec-ed wires (usually 60spoke or 72 spoke in later cars.) The steel wheels were VERY prone to bending.

Heck, I even met a TR3 vintage racer who had a steel wheel break during cornering. He went to aftermarket mags.

And wires aren't that bad. Just buy them, have them trued and you're good for a very long time, especially on a weekend/fair weather car.

Also, keep in mind that all TR2-TR3s with wires had "adapters" ...none had the traditional "built-on" wires like other British cars.

Steve I already have a good set of wires picked out at work. I just have to haggle a price with my boss. I am thinking I might go as high as $125.
