To fans of the Red Green show, this sounds like the Possum Sub.

I am glad they got help at least, I hope everyone ends up ok.

From what I read earlier on another news site, there's a bit of a row brewing over this. Four of these subs have been sold to the Canadian government, they were all supposed to be seaworthy, three are still in a Scottish port undergoing repairs/maintenance. The fourth one was deemed ready to sail(if that describes a sub!), but obviously not. Hasn't the Canadian PM come under fire because of the deal?? Anyone see Down Periscope?

According to the BBC this morning, Canada was considering legal action.
I would imagine the subs would be easy to spot submerged as well, by the tell tale oil slick left behind.

These subs are VERY bad news:

https://www.theherald.co.uk/news/25532.html

"Blaze sub crewman dies after airlift to hospital

A CANADIAN navy crewman has died in hospital after being airlifted from a submarine left stranded in the Atlantic following a fire on board."

I understand that at least two others were hospitalized and several others injured.

"Under Fire".... Not up here, we're /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/canpatriot.GIF we just re-elect 'em. We also have a fleet of SeaKing hellicopters that are about 30 years old, and dropping out of the sky. This Gvmt cancelled a deal to buy new ones, that the Conservitive Gvmt set up several years ago and ended up costing us more in fines for cancelling the contract. And this stuff is just going to continue unfortunatly. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

WE of course don,t need these things seeing that our airforce is rubber band gliders and our warships are canoes with potato guns, but it saddens me to think these sailors sacrificed their lives for something that the government doesn,t even realize what they have bought.......tin cans .......Guess the Russian K19 widowmaker wasn,t available

Makes me grateful we didn't buy an aircraft carrier off the Brits. Helpful hint: We Aussies build our own subs, at least that way we know who to blame. They aren't overly successful either. Anyone wanna buy a second hand Australian sub? Almost new, less than two world circumnavigations on the clock! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nopity.gif

My deepest sympathies to the crew, their loved ones and comrades.

These warriors perform their duties in a world more hostile than most of us can imagine. We owe them the greatest respect and gratitude.

If you ask me these have become very expensive "lease to own subs". A person life is worth more than any money saved on buying used subs.

The Canadian Navy also rents the torpedo's from the US Navy.

This torpedo renting is a good thing. If one is fired and it doesn't go off, you just bring it back as they are fully covered under a misfire warrenty. Really, God bless those guys. They have a dangerous job at the best of times, let alone when there is an equipment flaw of this great of a magnitude. The loss of life in this case was gut wrenching.
