Yes... we have some nice cars in the frozen north

Just came back from the local British/European car show, the only one that actually happens around these parts the whole year, not quite the selection in more populated areas but some very neat cars (this show is open to both British and European)...

The highlight list:

- 1920 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost (coachwork by Cole if I recall correctly)... first showing of the car at this years' show

- 1939 MG SA tourer (coachwork by Tickford)... drop-dead gorgeous, first time I've seen it myself but it's a well known local car that has been around for a few years here

- 1948 Jaguar Mk IV drophead (by Tickford)... not sure if I took any pictures of it today in particular, have taken pictures of it before

- 1950 Jaguar XK120 OTS (roadster)... gorgeous car complete with set of fender skirts; plus a nice 1954 XK120 roadster as well

- 1965 VW Karmann-Ghia (the Type 4-based one)... the neat coachbuilt Karmann-Ghia, and - sorry folks down south - only ever sold in Canada back then

- 1976 BMW 2002... a special car built as a replica of a well known Alpina-built 2002 that dates back to 1974, neat looking car

- 1956 Mercedes-Benz 300SL gull-wing

- 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300d sedan

- A bunch of nice Italian cars... Alfa's, Fiat's, Dino 246, Dino 308GT4, Ferrari 308's/328's, Lamborghini 400GT/Countach

- The usual gaggle of MGA's (one twin-cam roadster), MGB's, Austin-Healey's and Triumph's (but one TR8 coupe though, see post in Triumph)

- And last-but-not-least... a nice pair of Triumph TR2's including the one that belongs to our very own Brian Towne

Hopefully pictures should be back by tomorrow and will try to get them online, keep posted...

[One more fact about nice cars up here... there are four known original Ford GT40's in Canada, three of them reside in Calgary, none were here today though]

I saw a GT40 (or replica) on my way home. Likely coming back from the other show.

Frozen North? Way down South in Calgary? (I'm working in North Pole, AK.)

I have not been to a show, but there have been some interesting cars driving about while I am commuting from Fairbanks each day. This week was a '59 El Camino, a Crosley Sedan, a Studebaker Lark, a Nash Metropolitan, a ''56 Chevy Station Wagon 2 door non-Nomad, and this morning, (I work 7 days per week) a '58 ford sedan. Yesterday there was a Vega Wagon at the MacDonalds.

These are not great cars, of course, but cars you don't see much of, and they were being used. The El Camino and '56 wagon were both hauling furniture & household goods!

It's surprizing to hear that there are that many neat cars "up north". Sometimes, even here in NJ, it seems like our warm season is sort of limited for these types of cars. I guess you guys really have to make the most of a short season! Great pictures too!
We had a sort of mini-car show at my buddy's place yesterday. It was our annual car-club pigroast + beer festival.
We had six Minis, a Lotus Elan coupe, several MGBs, an ALFA Spider, a Thames van, a Ferrari 250 GT.....and my Miata. We went for rides in everything but I forgot to take pictures.

You know, you Flames fans are not all that far from us Avalanche fans. You should consider coming down to our Colorado English Motoring Conclave--600 British-only cars and motorcycles--each September. Great weather, good roads, a higher speed limit, no cities to slow down for, no mountains to cross, aspen changing color to gold and orange, before hockey season starts (even in years with a hockey season!)--what more could you ask? This invite may be a little late this year--the show is September 19--but consider it for the future.

And maybe we could get the local MG, Triumph, Austin-Healey, and Jaguar clubs interested in making Calgary a future fall "Moab" trip (the MG Club takes a trip every September, but no matter the destination--Taos, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque this year--it is always referred to as "the Moab trip"). All it takes is an invitation! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/patriot.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/canpatriot.GIF

At our Federation Picnic two weeks ago....an amazing vehicle was spotted...a 1933 SS 1 sports tourer. in original condition.well ok somewhat rusty. But still very original. Most of you may remember them..The Swallow Standard, with the big swallow mascot. A Swallow body on a Standard 16 chassis. Alas after WW2 SS had rather sinister connotations....so the company was renamed Jaguar!

Lovely vehicle...pity it wasn't a front shot Jeff. I can't see the mascot clearly although it looks like a jaguar on there. Not a Swallow.
