distributor cap

I am having a very difficult time finding a distributaor cap to fit my 74 TR6. I was changing all of the ignition wires, plugs, rotor, and cap, and I did not keep the cap that was on the car. I also changed over to a Pertronix ignition. I have tried four different caps. I even orderd the Bosch replacement cap from Victoria British, and it doesn't fit. The cap that was on the car was flat on top and orange in color. all of the caps that i have been able to find have been rounded across the top and do not fit. They all seem to be about 1/8-1/4" too short. The electronic ignition is not in the way. I am totally frustrated. Can anyone help?

Hi, do you have the right dist, is it lucas or delco remy. delco was used on some GT6s and will fit a TR6, could be someone changed your dist. Or the problem could be sumpen else. Just teasing, need more info to help.

Hi, are you sure you have the rotor on correctly, or the right one, have you tried fitting the cap with no rotor at all. The leads arn't in the way are they. Does the cap rock back and forth when trying to fit it. Did you take the dist out when fitting the kit.

Considering you location, you could try the following:

Remove the distributor and bring it in to Dave at Moss East (in Dover NJ). Dave only works on Saturday (and he's at Carlise 5/15 to 5/18). He's really good with problems like this.

You could try this during a weekday at Moss also, but some of the counterpeople may not be as knowledgeable.

The 22D6 is the distributor that is specified in the Bentley shop manual for all years of the TR6. Does anyone know of a different distributor cap than the oem or the copies of the oem? As I mentioned at the begining of this thread, there was a non-oem cap on the car which I thought was a Bosch cap, but no one seems to have this cap.

Hello Rob,

A 22D6 sounds too early a distributor for a '74 TR6. I think the correct one would be a 45D6 or maybe a 43D6, so if you are ordering a cap for a 74 TR6 you will get the wrong cap. I don't know when the TR250 came into America but it's possible that it came from that.

Hello Rob,
There is a UK company who I'm sure can help you,
www.holden.co.uk or holden@holden.co.uk. Quote the distributor service number which starts with
4 eg 41219B is an early TR6 number. They also do reconditioning but obviously there can be a big time factor due to your location.
good luck,
Alec

The final result is this. I took the distributor apart to find that somehow the spindle had lifted itself about 1/4" out of its seated position, which is what was causing my problem. I also found the little metal cilp from a rotor that someone had let drop into the distributor which was impeding the free spinning of the unit. It is now clean, regreased, and functioning better than new. Thanks for all of the sugggestions.
