Electric vs Mechanical fuel pump?

I currently have a mechanical fuel pump in my Spitfire, but seems I am always having problems with it.

Is there any advantage to changing to an electric fuel pump? What are the pros and cons? If I did swap it out, what's the recommended brand and where should I mount it? I'm assuming I should wire it so that it stops if the engine dies (for safety) but not sure the best way. Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks,
Larry

Hey Larry. If it were me I would just stick to the mechanical fuel pump. My last Spitfire the mechanical pump went out on me. So I went to Auto Zone and bought a electric pump and fitted it under the bonnet. It would do fine until I hit 45-50 mph. Then it started surging like it was starved for fuel. This doesn't make you feel very secure when traveling back roads. Anyway that's just my opinion. I'm sure others may have had better luck with them.

Hi
I to would stay with the mechanical pump. I have fited many electric pumps or the years and sometimes they work well but not always. I dont remember the original pumps having much problem.

The Japanese electronic pulse pumps which are as common as dirt these days are very reliable and more than adeqate, but the one thing you must remember is that they are pushers, not suckers. Therefore, they must be mounted in close proximity to the tank, not in the engine compartment. Failure to do so will result in fuel starvation at higher speeds.
