Stupid thing won't un-link.

Oh, well.

I knew Jerrie. Not well, but knew her. Read the bit on humanitarian flights into the Amazon.

Worked on her Britten-Norman Islander after she hit a termite mound in tall grass out in the middle of nowhere.

Real character. One side kick was a paraplegic. Invented hand controls for rudder, and she was able to fly right seat.

May she rest in peace, for sure. What an inspiration to so many people.

Far as I know, she was never a candidate for the astronaut program, but she and 12 other women did go through all the Project Mercury testing, under a private sponsorship. Also interesting to note that sponsorship's connection with Jackie Cochran.

You would not believe what a Colombian Termite Mound can do to an aircraft.
Ripped the nose gear right off the bulkhead. Two big pieces of lumber to go on each side of the damaged bulkhead, and a bunch of big carriage bolts through them and the gear mount.
Ripped the attaching bolts on the right gear out, so it rotated 90 degrees, and ripped the brake line off.

Temporary patch on bolts, flew it back to our installation with no brakes, fixes the right gear mount bolts better and brake line, and off she went.
