i have a nastied up bn6 with stock rearend. i have decided to install a narrowed 8.8 ford rearend with disc brakes. my question....can i remove the rearend intact after separating it from the springs, drive shaft. shocks, panhard bar, etc. and, of course removal of the wheels. i do not want to disassemble the rear unless necessary. I did use the search but did not find the topic. thanks for your help.

Re: removing complete rear end from bn6,,,

You cant pull the whole rear axle out the side unless you have everything disconnected and the differential removed . The differential makes it to long to get by the real seat sheet metal .
also removing the diff makes it way lighter .

I was able to remove and reinstall my rear end with the differential inplace. I used a rolling trolley jack under the diff to help move it to the side and then it took two people to lift it over the springs. Not a piece of cake but certainly doable.

Like Rob, I could R&R mine without removing the differential. Taking the brake drums off will also make it lighter. I don't recall if I needed to remove the brake backing plates, since I have disc brakes now.

Re: removing complete rear end from bn6,,,

After draining the juice and undoing everything, I jacked it up under the pumpkin and placed 2 x 4s across the frame just in front of and just behind the axle. IIRC I clamped them to the frame rails. Was able to lift the backing plates onto the 2 x 4s and slide the axle out one side. Axles and drums were removed before, I think. Installation was the reverse of removal. :fat:

You might undo the rear spring shackles. Might help to get it down some. I put mine in through the side - I think with fenders off. Long ago.
