There are oodles of stories like this in Oregon. I also had difficulties getting my "BOINK" plate... though after appealing to the office that handles it ("hey, there's a Calvin & Hobbes book entitled 'Scientific Progress Goes Boink' that my kid love"), they let me have it. I have, though, one time, had to defend transferring it from a Mini to the Sprite (because the word is still on a list of banned terms).
There was a woman named Barbara Shaw here that wanted "BS" and couldn't have it; there was a guy that had a 1969 El Camino that was allowed "69" but was revoked when he tried to transfer it to a newer model.
No end to this stuff... but I like the creativity used to end-run it all.
