TR2/3/3A Rolled / wired edges

In replacing the lower rear section of the front mudguards I had to open out some of the wired edge to join the new section of wire to the old. There was a lot of dirt inside although the wire which had surface rust was in fairly good condition. I opened the rolled edge all the way around the wheel arch to clean this out, wire brushed, rust converted and flushed it out. I then cold galved and rolled the wire back again.
Have others generally opened the rolled section and cleaned this out when refurbishing mudguards? Is this the accepted practice?

I can only speak for myself but I left an inch of the old wire sticking out and cut the now wire an inch short. That was easy to do since I made my own patch panel. I don't remember any dirt or corrosion in the old wire and did not unroll more than a fraction of an inch. I'm sure if I looked more closely I would have found some crud in there and I probably should have looked but I didn't. You will have the advantage of knowing that all of yours is now like new.
I will say however, that the top part of that rolled does not seem to be prone to corrosion. At least that's my excuse.
