Why am I having difficulty starting from the key switch? Seems like the battery is weak and not turning the starter. However when pushing the solenoid button, the car starts easily?

If you are negative ground you can you jumper from the Positive battery terminal to the terminal on the solenoid switch that is connected to the starter switch. If it starts OK there it is possible a bad starter switch or a lose connection.
Positive ground jumper to the negative battery terminal.

Didn't mean key switch. Meant to say starter button.

Jumping from the battery to the terminal on the solenoid that goes to the starter would be the same as pushing the button on the solenoid, I think. A loose connection somewhere between the stater button, key switch, voltage regulator and solenoid might be more likely. The motor will turn from the starter button but not strong enough to start the car and seems like the battery dies but then I start the car from the solenoid and it starts right up.

It could be the solenoid, i would try David's suggestion first to see if power direct to the solenoid makes a difference

Make sure the solenoid is securely grounded. IMO its worth taking it loose tto check for hidden corrosion underneath.

The suggested test is to momentarily jumper to the side terminal on the solenoid, which should be the same as pishing the starter button. I think it unlikely you will see a difference, but its worth a try. If you do, then it points to a wiring problem or bad switch.

Most likely a bum solenoid, but check the other stuff before shelling out for a new one.
