Would like to ask for help identifying this ring and pinion from the Austin-Healey group. Can't find any info.

Thanks in advance.

Is there really a difference; i.e. different tooth counts on the pinion or ring, or both? I've always used 3.5 and 3.54 interchangeably.

I've wondered that myself. When Lempert set out to make a gear set to replicate the 3.54, how did it end up being a 3.55? But that's the way they labeled it, so there must be a reason.

However, whether or not there is a good reason, there's really no difference. I got one of his first batch and it's installed in my BN2. I like the longer legs, but the first thing Steve Pike said when he drove the car was, "Where's the power?" I guess he really noticed the slower acceleration. I don't drive it aggressively and so to me the taller rear end is only an advantage.

I think BN2s originally came with a 4.1:1 rear end, so that would be a bigger change than the 3.9 that was in my BJ8. At any rate, for a highway cruiser like my BJ8 the 3.5whatever is a blessing. With the 3.9, first gear is so low as to be unnecessary most of the time, but with the 3.5 it's about right, and second is better, too (still too small a gap between first and second).
