TR6 1976 TR6 Gas smell in Trunk

Hi Folks! Is it common to have a gas smell in the trunk? When I refurbished the gas tank I pulled it out and had it professional blasted and coated so I don't think the tank itself is the issue. There are four connections - filler tube, gas gauge, vapor recovery, and the discharge line up to the engine.

Anyone with a similar experience? Many Thanks!

Was the mat under the tank, changed or replaced ?...The original mat was 'felt' (Moss #763-040) and was good at retaining the odor of gas if there was ever a leak or a spill from over filling.
A closed cell foam is more practical.

Does this mean you disabled the vent line? And if so, is there any downside to doing this? Many thanks!

There might be a downside to blocking off the vent pipe if the gases build up but I'd assume that our tanks don't really seal 100% anyway.
Might not be safe I suppose.
My car sat in my mother's garage which is part of her house, her house had a bit of a smell of petrol at times.
So I repaired the leaking fuel pump and used petrol resistant tape on the inlet and outlet, removed the tank and had the outlet repaired (2nd time the tank's been repaired).
It still smelled of petrol so I blocked off the vent pipe and no more discernible smell.
I overhauled my carbies years ago as they leaked but need to do that again as they have started to leak a bit again or I can replace them with injectors.

Generally, you'll need some where for air to get in so the gasoline can get out...otherwise a vacuum will be created as the fuel level drops, then the flow of gas stops.

Thanks for all of the input. I later found that there are some old threads on this subject as well, which are helpful, Apparently, a very common problem.

My main target is the fuel gauge which I replaced a few years ago when I completely refurbished the tank. I recall the screws did not want to seat completely and I didn't want to force them.

The vent line is new and appears to be properly clamped but if the carbon filter has a problem it might cause the vent line not to work properly? Can the carbon canister be cleaned or just buy a new one ($67 form Moss)?

I'll report back on progress! Many thanks!

The carbon canister comes apart and can be cleaned. I believe that you may be able to get carbon granules from a place that sells aquarium supplies. With that said, I just disconnected mine.
